The Norfolk plan in Essex Pylons goes to a new stage of journals

The plans of a network of 114 -mile pylons (183 km) moved into a new examination phase, led by the planning inspection.

National Grid wants to build the electricity network via Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, which extends from Norwich to Tilbury.

The planning inspection accepted its request on Friday, which means that the authority would begin to prepare for a complete examination of the program.

Project director Simon Pepper said he had marked a “significant step”, but the activists insisted that they were “very angry” about the progressing plans.

Norwich’s substations, Bramford in Suffolk and Tilbury, Essex, must feed the pylons, which will transport electricity powered by offshore wind farms.

National Grid said they could feed up to six million houses and businesses.

About 21 km (13 miles) from the route take place underground, some via the national landscape of Dedham Vale.

National Grid has been sent around 20,000 comments from the community since he started consulting the project in 2022.

With the request accepted by the planning inspection, the project enters the pre-examination phase.

This phase will last several months, fixing hearings and contacting those interested in a complete subsequent exam, which could take six months.

Once it is finished, the plan will be assessed by an independent inspector, then transmitted to the Secretary of State, who has the last word.

“This project will play an essential role in connection more renewable energy to the network,” said Pepper.

The director added that this would help provide “more affordable electricity” to houses and businesses and to meet growing demand.

Nearly 40,000 people have signed a petition calling an offshore grid or to operate the cables underground.

“An integrated offshore grid is better for consumers, communities, campaigns, coasts and marine life,” said Pylons East Anglia campaign group.
