Man Utd star compared to 1999 triple winner after performance against Tottenham

Ben Jacobs was full of praise for a Manchester United player during their draw against Tottenham Hotspur, comparing him to a treble winner at Old Trafford.
Matthijs de Ligt struck deep in stoppage time to save Manchester United from a 2-2 draw after a dramatic finale at Tottenham. This repeat of May’s Europa League final looked set to go the way of improvement for Ruben Amorim’s side after Bryan Mbeumo haunted former Brentford boss Thomas Frank with a 32nd-minute goal.
It sparked boos at half-time from a disgruntled Spurs fan base who have had just three home wins in the Premier League in 2025, but the hosts turned things around with substitute Mathys Tel able to produce an equalizer in the 84th minute.
When Richarlison deflected a shot from the excellent Wilson Odobert in the first minute of injury time, Frank looked set to achieve the league home victory they had lacked for five months.
Yet wild celebrations at home were followed by later drama when De Ligt headed in from a corner in the sixth minute of added time to earn United a 2-2 draw and extend their unbeaten run under Amorim to five matches.
In a dramatic match full of twists and turns, Jacobs picked out a Man United player who enjoyed a performance comparable to a former treble winner, in the highest praise he could receive.
Journalist compares Lammens to Schmeichel
Lammens enjoyed an excellent performance and was just five minutes away from keeping a clean sheet, only for Spurs to come back into the game. The two goals did not detract from the goalkeeper’s performance, however, with saves from Joao Palhinha and Cristian Romero particularly notable.
It’s also worth noting that both goals Lammens conceded were deflected, giving him no chance in United’s net.
Jacobs was one of many to praise the summer signing, going so far as to say he is Peter Schmeichel “in disguise” after his save from Romero in the second half.
By the time the full-time whistle blew, Lammens had made two diving saves and made five recoveries in a solid performance. As each game goes on, he looks more and more like a great signing and the much-needed upgrade to Andre Onana that United have been desperately seeking.
Amorim’s side are now five matches unbeaten, marking a significant improvement on their previous form. As the international break approaches, things are finally looking up for those at Old Trafford. Mbeumo is running at full speed, Lammens is performing well and European qualification once again seems a realistic goal.
