Karun Nair stands while India collapses in a rain competition

Ind vs Eng Saints: Karun Nair criticized his first test 50 while India was recovering at 204/6 on day 1 at the oval

Karun Nair scored his maiden Test half-century in a forgettable display for India on Day 1 in the IND vs ENG 5th Test. Put into bat, the visitors slipped to 204/6 at Stumps at The Oval. The contest was a stop start affair in London, with rain playing spoilsport on more than one occasion.

England had made a host of changes to their XI following Ben Stokes injury. India also made 3 changes with Karun Nair, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna all returning to the team. Gill lost another toss and India were batting in helpful bowling conditions at The Oval.

Shubman Gill goes past Sunil Gavaskar

Shubman Gill has enjoyed a prolific tour of England. The Indian captain on Thursday etched his name into history with yet another stunning display. Gill took his tally to 733 before lunch on Day 1 in the IND vs ENG 5th Test. Sunil Gavaskar scored 732 against the West Indies back in the day. He could have added to his tally, but a brainfade moment saw him run out for 21.

Karun Nair finally repays Gambhir faith

Karun Nair might just have saved his Test career on Thursday. With India in tatters, Nair stitched together a fine half-century on a testing Oval wicket. With Rishabh Pant out, Nair slotted in at No.5 and smashed a vital 52 on Day 1. It is the kind of innings Gautam Gambhir would have hoped for when recalling him into the side.

Chris Woakes injury haunts England

England’s injury troubles have just worsened on Day 1 of the IND vs ENG 5th Test. Having lost Ben Stokes to a shoulder injury, Chris Woakes suffered the same fate in the outfield at The Oval. Woakes, who featured in all 5 Tests of the India vs England series was taken off late in the day after an awkward stop at the boundary. While test results are awaited, Woakes had a sling around his arm and is unlikely to take further part in the game.

No more flat wickets?

Runs have been easy to come by during the India vs England series so far. However, on Thursday, Oval flipped the script. Green track, overcast conditions and suddenlt, batting was a hard task. England were guilty of bowling freebies, allowing India to get past 200. Gus Atkinson was impressive on return but the rest struggled to probe on a consistent basis. Jos Tongue struck twice with peachers but was otherwise wayward.
