John Woo’s Most Disappointing Remake Finds Redemption on Streaming

Director John has given us some of the most action-packed films, like Difficult target, Mission: Impossible 2, Face/Offjust to name a few. One of his most iconic films, The killerreceived worldwide praise and was remade with Game of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel in 2024. The remake, directed by Woo himself, had amazing action and performances, but did not do well at the box office. Nonetheless, the film is now getting its due on streaming.

The killer rose to seventh place in Amazon Prime’s global top 10according to FlixPatrol, in recent weeks. It has since fallen to #33, which is still impressive considering the streamer’s extensive library. It stands amid titles like Red, She rides a shotgunand holiday favorites like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and more. During its limited theatrical release, it grossed just over $318,618 on a budget of $30 million. As for its rating, critics awarded a 59 percent rotten tomatoes ratingwhile the audience score is even lower, at 49 percent.

What is “The Killer” about?

With a gender-swapped leader, The killer follows an infamous professional hitwoman, Zee, living in Paris. She is well known and feared in the city’s underbelly as the “Queen of the Dead”. Things change when, during a mission from her dark mentor and handler, Zee refuses to kill a blinded young woman in a nightclub. The move breaks Zee’s alliances and attracts the attention of a police investigator. She is then plunged into a sinister criminal conspiracy that puts her on a collision course with her own past.

The action thriller features compelling performances from Emmanuel and Omar Sy as Sey. It has some amazing action choreography, all performed very well by Emmanuel and Sy, making it a compelling watch. The scenario of Brian Helgeland, Josh CampbellAnd Matt Stuecken keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the performance. No wonder the film is getting its due on streaming, as it continues to appear on the streaming charts. Aside from the aforementioned cast, the feature also features a mix of Hollywood and French talent, including Sam Worthington while Zee trades Finn, Diana Silvers like Jennifer, Said Taghmaoui like Prince Majeb, and Angeles Woo like Chi. The cast is further completed by Eric Cantona, Tchéky Karyo, Gregory Montel, Hugo Diego Garcia, Elie Haddad, Jaz Singh Deol, Michael ErpeldingAnd Aurélia Agelamong others.
