How a ‘viral image’ started Rohit Sharma’s fitness journey for India-Australia ODIs

Rohit Sharma had not played any competitive cricket since early June and had gained weight in the following months.
In August, Rohit Sharma returned from vacation with his family. As usual, the paparazzi arrived at the airport. The images and videos shot that day went viral, but for the wrong reasons. Having retired from two formats and with little to no competitive cricket, it seemed Rohit had put on a bit of weight.
How a picture made Rohit Sharma lose 10 kg
Rohit’s fitness and weight issues had already been well documented. Several people have criticized Rohit for not paying enough attention to his fitness, but since he has continued to play, there has been little to no pushback. But after his cricket test, he was asked questions.
While Rohit looked a bit distorted, people edited the original image to make him look ‘fat’. The picture went viral and even Rohit saw them. This sparked a change. He called up his former Mumbai teammate and Indian batting coach Abhishek Nayar and planned a fitness regime for the India vs Australia ODI series.
Before the end of September, Rohit had lost 10 kg. He looked fitter than ever. Nayar, who was the man behind this physical transformation, has now opened up about how this viral image led Rohit to go back to the drawing board and reinvent himself at 38 years old.
“There was a lot of talk about his weight gain, and some footage of him leaving the airport. So it was about changing all that and, in many ways, being healthier, faster and fitter,” Nayar said on Star Sports.
“I think early on we realized there were 12 weeks left before the Australia series, so the idea was to do something different. As we had time off, the focus was not just on maintaining, but on growing. Growth in terms of his physical structure, movement, the way he saw himself, looking in the mirror and being in a place where he felt fitter, faster and more agile on the field, even with the bat.” he added.
