Political prisoner Sikh Bhai Lal Singh Akalgarh spent 28 years behind bars in India. Arrested in 1992, Bhai Lal Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Tada court in 1997. In India, those sentenced to life imprisonment were released after spending 10 to 14 years in prison, but Bhai Lal Singh was made 28 years behind bars. He was permanently released from prison in August 2020.
