As part of the regulation, Brown has agreed not to engage in racial discrimination in admissions or university programming, and will give access to admission data to the federal government so that it can assess compliance with admissions based on merit. Unlike the Columbia agreement, the Brown agreement with the Trump administration does not seem to include restrictions on how the school teaches.
The agreement also prohibits Brown from the execution of any surgery asserted by the sexes on minors or to prescribe Puberty blockers, treatment of gender dysphoria This prevents the body from doing certain hormones. Although the university has a medical school, it has never carried out surgeries affirming the sexes and is a distinct entity of Brown University Health, formerly Lifespan Corp., the largest state health care system. Brown has also agreed to adopt the definitions of a man and a woman, who were presented in an executive decree in January, for sports, programming, installations and accommodation for women.
In a statement, Brown president Christina H. Paxson said there were aspects of the agreement that “are the priorities of the federal administration to resolve the financing”.
“I have declared that Brown should respect its ethical and legal obligations while firmly defending academic freedom and freedom of expression, both for the university as an institution and for individual members of our community,” said Paxson. “By voluntarily concluding this agreement, we fulfill these double obligations.”
The agreement will also force Brown to conduct a climate investigation into the campus and report the results to the Trump administration. Other parties of the agreement simply codify what was previously promised by Brown in the fight against alleged anti -Semitism on the campus.

Brown receives around $ 250 million in federal funding each year. Located in Providence, the school is one of the largest employers in Rhode Island and a key player in the construction of the life sciences and the state medical industries. It is already faced with a budget deficit of $ 46 million and a job frost, and had to find funding by diving into its grant of $ 7.2 billion, which is one of the smallest among the schools of the Ivy League. Administration criticisms argued that Trump is trying to extort universities and inhibit academic freedom.
“The only way to face a tyrant is to get up strong,” said Jamie Raskin, the best democrat of the Chamber’s judicial committee and former professor of constitutional law, earlier this month. “No college or university should negotiate any institutional freedom and its academic prerogatives.”
The regulations come when higher education establishments face the general financial impacts of Trump “Big, Beautiful Bill” which became the law on July 4. Although the Brown agreement can bring a certain relief to its campus, other elite universities are still fighting against the requests of the Trump administration.
Harvard continued the administration last month for financing reductions, accusing the use by the federal government of research funding as a lever effect to exercise control over academic affairs, admissions, hiring and diversity practices of the university represents an unconstitutional abuse of federal power. Harvard also negotiates with the Trump administration to restore its federal dollars, and the university has brought a handful of changes that report it more with Trump’s objectives.
Trump said Harvard will probably have a high price to pay too. Asked Wednesday if the $ 500 million was sufficiently considered, Trump said it could be.
