When Jolie turned around, she revealed an unexpected back cutout that perfectly frames a variety of large tattoos she’s accumulated over the years. In fact, if you look closely, the top panel that holds the dress together appears to come right above her “know your rights” tattoo, which is said to be the title of her favorite song by The Clash.
The dress itself is a cross between the runway version and a ready-to-wear dress that currently retails for $1,773. While Alberta Ferretti creative director Lorenzo Serafini’s runway design featured sparkling embellishments and more dramatic draping, the cape dress that can be purchased doesn’t include an open back at all.
Clearly, this happy medium was the perfect solution for Jolie, who recently highlighted the importance of her tattoos in an interview with Behind the scenes. “There’s something about being an actor that you’re often expected to become a blank slate between two characters,” she said, revealing that she was warned against tattoos early in her career for this very reason.
Obviously, she ignored this advice. “It was one of the many things I did in my life that was separate from filmmaking and being in front of the camera: it was me and not a character,” she said. “So I wasn’t left a blank slate, even literally.”
