The host of ESPN, Pat McAfee, apologized for having repeated a sexually explicit rumor about the 18-year-old student, Mary Kate Cornett, in her daily talk show, saying that as a self-proclaimed “girl of girl” that he regrets his actions.

Recently, he said, he was able to do it and therefore felt ready to express himself. More specifically, he said, he was able to tell the teenager’s father that he was “unfortunate on the part that our show played in the pain of his daughter Mary Kate”.
“These are wonderful people, and I am very grateful that they gave me the opportunity to tell them how sorry I was,” he said about the family.
“I deeply regret the pain caused. I hated seeing what our show was a part,” said McAfee, according to Today. “And I hope it can be something we all learn in the future. I know we certainly have it.”

Original story: There is no clear reason why Mary Kate Cornett, a normal Ole Miss student before without any type of public profile, has become a bag of internet punch apparently overnight. But all the explanations we have are all extremely depressed. In 2014, #Gamergate revealed the worst type of harassment and misogyny with which women are attacked online. But Cornett’s story proves that a woman does not even need to be on the internet to become her target.
The test began with a random rumor published on the internet on a young woman with a liaison with the father of her boyfriend. The position became viral on X, which attracted the attention of certain high -level sports commentators, who then amplified history to their massive audience. Cornett, who was appointed in the original rumor, denied that there is real in history, and there is absolutely no evidence suggesting that there is – but that did not stop harassment.

On February 25, 2025, the user of X @MAGAGEDON published an image of an alleged conversation Snapchat, who said that Cornett had met the father of his boyfriend during a break in the university, and the two had had sex. The undeclared position also said that Cornett’s boyfriend and his mother had discovered the so-called affair. The post X also included photos of Cornett, his boyfriend and the LinkedIn profile of his boyfriend.
The message has taken off and currently 1.5 million views on X. The virality of the rumor has even inspired certain Internet users to create a piece of memes called the MKC token, using the Cornett initials.
