Star Wars is finally launching an Old Republic project in the Disney era (but I hope this is just the beginning)

After more than a decade, Star Wars and Disney are finally preparing to return to the era of the Old Republic. It’s one of the franchise’s richest and most beloved eras, defined by massive Jedi-Sith wars, morally complex heroes, and some of the richest stories in the galaxy, many of which were controversially made non-canonical after Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012.

Although the Old Republic era has always existed canonically, it has largely remained in limbo with few characters and elements confirmed as official canon. Now, hopefully, everything will change with the recent announcement of The fate of the Old Republic (although my deepest wish is that this new game is only the beginning).

13 years later, Disney finally has a Star Wars project for the Old Republic era

The first true project from Disney’s Old Republic era is coming soon with The fate of the Old Republicdirected by Casey Hudson. Hudson previously helmed the original KOTOR games, which are still considered among the greatest Star Wars stories never told (and some of the best RPGs in general).

When Disney reset the canon, most of the Old Republic lore was relegated to Legends. Aside from a few small but exciting references to Darth Revan, Meetra Surik, and/or the Rakatan Empire, the era has remained largely untouched.. Some of the best Star Wars the stories were erased from the official canon overnight.

Likewise, the absence of projects from the Old Republic has always been visible. On Star Wars’ On their website’s official timeline page, Old Republic Era has been empty for 13 years, a clear reminder of what fans are missing. Fortunately and finally, The fate of the Old Republic will be the first significant entry.

More importantly, this potentially marks a major turning point for Lucasfilm and Disney. Bringing in Hudson suggests Lucasfilm understands how personal this is Star Wars This era is for long-time fans only. This suggests that this is largely a deliberate re-entry into one of the Star Wars’ most dynamic and richest periods (which will hopefully be explored beyond a single game).

Fate Of The Old Republic is a good start (but we need movies and shows too)

Obviously, The fate of the Old Republic It already sounds like this will be a great first step, but it really shouldn’t be the last. The Old Republic isn’t a small corner of canon, it’s a galaxy-defining era that will only thrive on an epic scale with games…and more.

After all, the Old Republic era was a time before Darth Bane’s Rule of Two, meaning countless Jedi Knights and Sith Lords faced each other in open war. We’re talking about entire armies that used both the Force and lightsabers.

This scale of storytelling requires long-form live processing. A Revan film trilogy could single-handedly anchor years of Star Wars the narration. It’s also not hard to imagine something like a dark side series featuring the Sith triumvirate (Nihilus, Sion, Kreia).

If The fate of the Old Republic proves a success (and it probably will), Lucasfilm needs to push even further into the Old Republic. This era deserves as much movies, shows, games, books, and overall world-building as we’ve seen for every other era in history. Star Wars chronology.
