Zohran Mamdani leads the primary chiefs of the mayor of the city of New York for the tab of choice classified
The state assembly, Zohran Mamdani, is the first leader, because the first choice votes are recorded during the primary of the Democrat mayor in New York, before the former governor of New York Andrew Cuomo, but the winner of the elections remains uncertain without lessons to obtain a majority in the first round of the elections of choice.
Until now, Mamdani leads the number of votes to the first choice with support of around 44%, followed by around 36% for Cuomo – the result of a rapid increase in Mamdani, which began the little -known breed but has quickly acquired importance as a progressive alternative in Cuomo.
And while New York will have to wait at least a week, perhaps longer, to find out who will ultimately win the democratic appointment through the city’s tabulum, Cuomo clearly told his supporters that he thought that the clock was flowing on his return offer.
“Tonight, it was not our night. Tonight, Tonight was the evening of the Mamdani Assembly and he led a big campaign and he touched the young people and inspired them and moved them and brought them out and voted and he really led a very hard -hitting campaign. I called him and I congratulated him,” said Cuomo, asking the supporters to give Mamdani applause.
“Tonight is his night. He deserved him, he won.”
Under the voting classified in the city, voters classify up to five preferences on their ballot. Support for the least fine candidates is then reassigned to the next choices of voters, and the process continues until there are two candidates.
The City Elections Council plans to publish the results of these first allowances next Tuesday. But depending on the number of postal and provisional bulletins, it is still necessary to count, it could take longer to determine a winner.
The wait had been expected given the field of 11 candidates who divides democratic votes. And the classified choice system can encourage candidates with low instance to stay because they know that the choices of their supporters can always be taken into account if they fail.
Mamdani’s ascent
Mamdani, a 33 -year -old state assembly of Queens who would be the first Muslim mayor of the city if he was elected, won steam in the last weeks of the race when he presented a progressive vision of the city. He carried out an energetic campaign focused on the fight against higher costs, promising to freeze rents and offer free buses, universal daycare services and other progressive policies that would be paid in part by increasing taxes on the rich.
He became the focal point of an anti-cumo movement which gathers behind the banner of “Don’t Rank Cuomo”, arguing that the former governor does not deserve a successful political return after having resigned from his functions in 2021 on allegations of sexual harassment. Mamdani obtained cross-agings with other candidates, including the city controller, Brad Lander and the former DNC vice-president, Michael Blake.
They ordered their supporters to also classify the other candidate on their ballot, an attempt to team up to use the classified choice vote so that a candidate moves away from Cuomo after several cycles of accumulated support for non-Cuomo voters.
Lander, who was arrested earlier this month, defender of defendants before the Federal Immigration Court, is the only other candidate sniffing with two figures. His decision to meet Mamdani, and to support him when other eminent New York Jews castigated Mamdani’s reluctance to denounce the slogan “globalizing the intifada”, could prove to be integral if the Lander supporters break largely for Mamdani and help him win the appointment.
“Together, we send Andrew Cuomo back in the suburbs! With our help, Zohran Mamdani will be the Democratic candidate for the mayor of the city of New York and we are on the way to the way to win a city that all New Yorkers can afford and where everyone belongs,” said Tuesday evening during the city of his campaign.
Mamdani also received eminent mentions from representatives of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Working Family Party, and the independent senator of Vermont Bernie Sanders, who, like Mamdani, identifies as a democratic socialist. Other eminent New Yorkers, such as the Attorney General of the Letitia James state, asked the supporters to include Mamdani on their classified voting bulletins (and for them to leave Cuomo) even by saying that they preferred another candidate.
Cuomo’s attempt to return
Cuomo has long been considered the favorite of the race, with its unique profile as a former of the official and national heavyweights of the Democratic Party on a state scale lending it a large name identification since the start of its campaign, which none of its rivals could match at the beginning. He looked greatly at this experience to affirm that he is the only candidate who could properly retaliate against President Donald Trump.
He gathered the important political support of the eminent democrat as the former mayor Michael Bloomberg, the former president of the Bronx district, Ruben Díaz Jr., the State and several members of the Congress. And he received a big boost from a super deep pocket (which received $ 8.5 million from Bloomberg) which covered the waves with advertisements singing his forces and criticizing Mandami.
But the return offer, which Cuomo himself launched cold water on Tuesday evening after having seen the initial results, occurs four years after having resigned under pressure after the surveys general of the State discovered that his administration had underestimated the deaths covored in nursing homes and that he sexually harassment several women. (Cuomo admitted at the time that he “made mistakes” but also said that he was a victim of “canceling culture”).

The two main candidates and their allies were without insurer in their criticisms of each other. The Pro-Cuomo Super PAC has broadcast a deluge of advertising framing Mamdani as “a risk that we cannot afford”, criticizing it as too radical for the city.
“Experience counts, and I think that inexperience is dangerous in this case. Mr. Mamdani has had staff of five people, will you now direct staff of 300,000 employees? ” Cuomo said in a debate organized by Spectrum News NY1 earlier this month.
He added: “He never dealt with the municipal council. He never dealt with the Congress. He never dealt with the state legislature. He never negotiated with a union. He has never built anything. He has never treated natural emergency. He never dealt with a hurricane, with a flood, and this.
But while Cuomo relied on this experience as a force, his opponents tried to turn the tables by reminding voters the reason why he is in the race first – his fall of grace four years ago after allegations of sexual harassment.
“To Mr. Cuomo: I never had to resign, I never cut Medicaid,” replied Mamdani to Cuomo during the Spectrum News / NY1 debate.
“I have never hunted down the 13 women who accuse me in a credible way of sexual harassment, I have never continued for their gynecological files, and I have never done these things because I am not you, Mr. Cuomo,” he added, ending by correcting Cuomo for force for having said his family name incorrectly.
The two also argued on Israel and his war with Hamas in Gaza. Cuomo attacked Mamdani seemed to defend the slogan “Globalize The Intifada” during an interview with Podcast published a week before the elections, and Cuomo and his allies strengthened the criticisms of those like the chief of the anti-diffation league and the American Holocaust museum. Mamdani responded during an emotional conversation with journalists in which he said that he believed “that there is no room for anti -Semitism in this city” and shared that he had received threats to his life according to his religion.
