Xhaka near the return of Premier League with Sunderland

Former Arsenal Granit Xhaka captain is close to a return to the Premier League with newly promoted Sunderland.

The reports indicate that the Black Cats are close to an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the 32-year-old man while the head coach Regis Le Bris seeks to add a Premier League experience to his team.

Swiss international Xhaka, who began his career in Basel before heading to Borussia Monchengladbach, spent seven years with the Gunners and familiarized well with the high flight of England.

He joined Arsenal for 35 million pounds sterling from Monchengladbach in the summer of 2016 and played 297 appearances for the club, winning two FA Cups, before returning to Germany with Leverkusen in July 2023.

He was part of the winning team of Xabi Alonso in 2024 and played 49 appearances in all competitions, including 10 in the Champions League, during the last campaign.

Combative player, Xhaka was stripped of Captain Arsenal in November 2019 after a stormy exchange with home fans at the Emirates Stadium.
