Wriddhiman Saha better guardian than Ms Dhoni? The former coach of India Fielding reveals

Without any doubt, MS Dhoni is India’s best-ever wicket-keeper batter. No one would ever dispute that. But when it comes to pure keeping brilliance, there is perhaps one man in India, who might just come a notch above legendary Dhoni as well. And that is Wriddhiman Saha. The former Bengal keeper was a bowler’s delight, who would assure safety behind the wickets.

Youtube is also filled with his wicket-keeping masterclass. And to only testify the claim, former India fielding coach R Sridhar has offered his take. For him, Dhoni as a complete package is also the No. 1 keeper, but on sheer brilliance behind the wicket — he too agreed with Saha’s name.

Speaking with Cricket.com, Sridhar said, “He is one of the best wicket-keepers I have spent time with. Very coachable, knows what he wants to work on, great pair of gloves, and a terrific person to have in the team. All and apart, the commitment he brought as a keeper.. he wasn’t the best of chirpers behind the wickets, he just stood silently behind the stumps. But the confidence he gave to his captain and bowlers, that Saha is behind the stumps, is enormous.”

He further continued: “He’ll be in the top 2, if not top. I have always maintained that he is the best keeper. MS Dhoni is of course the top, in his position as a leader. But Wriddhiman Saha as a keeper alone, top.” Meanwhile, Saha did not have a full-fledged career, and was only preferred in the absence of Dhoni, for obvious reasons.

In a career spanning 11 years, he went on to play 40 Tests for India, where he pouched 92 catches and effected 12 stumpings. Batting wise, he scored 1353 runs at an average of 30, including three tons and six fifies.
