Worse show for color players in 5 years

The appointments of EMMY 2025 provided significant gains in representation through breed, sex and identity, with some declines concerning.

In total, 94 players were recognized in the main categories of actor – lead, support and guest. Among the 24 are POC, a drop in the last five years. In 2024, 30 were color interpreters, representing 31%of nominees, which was an increase compared to 2023 (25 out of 102, or 24%) and 2021 (25 out of 97, or 26%), although it failed at the top of 2022, when 42 of the 108 candidates (39%) were people of color, the maximum of Emmys’ history. Look at the last decade of figures to see how this year compares:

The creator of “Abbott Elementary”, executive producer and Star Quinta Brunson continues her historic race Emmy for the Hit Abc Mockumentary. After having become the first solo black woman to win for the writing of comedy in 2022, and the second black woman to win the main comedy actress in 2023, she now links Stefani Robinson (“Atlanta” and “What We do in the shadows”) for the biggest appointment by a black woman – three in total – and becomes the first to reach the three for a single series.

With his fourth nomination as an actor, Brunson is now ranking as the third most nominated black woman of the actress of main comedy, only taking up Isabel Sanford (“The Jeffers”) and equally with Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-Iister”).

The main category of the comedy actress is the majority of women of color, with Brunson, Uzo Aduba of the “residence”, now included, and Ayo Edebiri. This marks the second consecutive year, this achievement has occurred.

Edebiri, 29, now holds the record as a younger black woman to receive three actor appointments at the Emmy. She is also nominated to direct the episode “Napkins”, becoming the first woman to be nominated to act and realize in the comedy categories the same year. She is also only the second black woman to be nominated for the realization of comedy after Millicent Shelton for “30 rock” in 2009.

Sterling K. Brown made a notable story of the Emmy. His main actor as a drama actor for Hulu’s “Paradise” marks the different seventh series for which he was recognized – binding Don Cheadle for the most among black male artists. Brown’s past appointments include “This is us”, “The people c. OJ Simpson: American crime story “,” Brooklyn nine-nine “,” La marvelous Mme Maisel “,” Lincoln: Divided We Stand (The Dog of War) “and” Invincible “. He was previously tied with André Braugher. Alfre Woodard remains the global leader with an amazing – and probably unbeatable – 17, none for the same series more than once.

Latin artists continue to cope with obstacles to Emmys.

Pedro Pascal obtained his second appointment for “The Last of Us” by HBO Max, which is only the second Latino has always nominated more than once (and still only among the two in total) in the actor of the main drama, after the four consecutive heads of Jimmy Smites for “Nypd Blue” (1996–99).

The superstar Selena Gomez continued her race for Emmy with a fourth consecutive nomination as an executive producer of “Only Murders in the Building”, extending her record as the most nominated Latina producer in history. His colleague executive producer Dan Fogelman, who is also nominated for “Paradise”, is the first person from David E. Kelley in 1999 to be nominated for the theater and comedy series. Kelley was nominated for “Ally McBeal” and “The Practice”, for which he won the two categories.

Liza Colón-Zayas, who marked history last year as the first Latina to win the actress of support comedy for “The Bear”, was again nominated. She is joined by Jessica Williams (“narrowing”), Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”) – linking another 2023 record for most women of color nominated in a single category of actor.

The Afro-Latino Colman Domingo continues his domination over the shows with his second career sign for “The Four Seasons” by Netflix. Previous winner for the dramatic actor invited for “Euphoria”, he is the first person since the name of André Braugher for “men of a certain age” to be the only appointment for a series of comedy.

Asian actors and creators have acquired significant terrain in recent years with “Squid Game”, “Beef” and “Shogun”. This year, Bowen Yang is the star, becoming the most nominated Asian male interpreter in history with his fourth nomination for “Saturday Night Live” by NBC. Only Sandra Oh has more among Asian artists.

However, several notable names AAPI have been snubbed, including Dichen Lachman (“Severance”), Chase Su Wonders (“The Studio”) and Thapthimthong (“The White Lotus”).

In particular, “The Last of Us” also missed the appointment of its large set of various talents, including the Latin stars Isabela Merced, Gabriel Luna and Danny Ramirez, as well as the interpreters Aapi Young Mazino and Tati Gabrielle.

And again, neither the “ghosts” of CBS nor his star Utkarsh Ambudkar have yet received recognition from the Emmy, perplexed in the minds of admirers passionate about this show everywhere.

In a difficult period for the LGBTQ community in the United States, there were milestones to celebrate. Bella Ramsey, star of “The Last of Us”, became the first openly non -binary interpreter to be nominated twice. At the age of 20, they were the nominated to the fourth row theater actress in the history of the Emmy and the youngest to receive two headlongs in the category.

Carl Clemons-Hopkins, who marked history in 2021 as the first non-binary interim candidate, was not recognized this year, still having only one appointment for “hacks”.

Breakout star, Tramell Tillman, obtained his first name to support the dramatic actor as mysterious Wordsmith Milchik in “Severance” by Apple TV +, alongside his worthy co-star Zach Cherry. If one of them wins, they would be the first black actor to be won in this category – the only category of actor still without a black winner in the 77 years of Emmys history.

The age has not proven any barrier for two Hollywood legends: Kathy Bates, 77, became the oldest nominated of the actress of the CBS “Matlock”, while Harrison Ford received his first career appointment for “narrowing” of Apple TV +. At 82, he is the second oldest nominated in the category of support comedy actor, behind Alan Arkin, who was 86 years old when he was nominated for “the Kominsky method”.

Women have made progress in the categories of realization and writing.

The exceptional staging for a limited series / TV movie included four women: the president of the DGA Lesli Link Glatter for “Zero Day”, Helen Shaver and Jennifer Getzinger for the episodes of “The Penguin” and Shannon Murphy for “Dying for Sex”. Jessica Lee Gagné (“Severance”) and Amanda Marsalis (“The Pitt”) represent in the dramatic race while Edebiri and the previous winner Lucia Aniello (“Hacks”) maintain him in comedy.

For the first time in the history of the Emmys, there is at least one woman who is part of each of the nominees to the writing of comedy. This is not the case for dramatic writing unfortunately, without a woman being one of the six nominated series, including the Debora Cahn, who projected, that many projected to make the cup for “the diplomat”. Three of the five limited limited series – “Black Mirror”, “Dying for Sex” and “The Penguin” – have women represented.

This year’s Emmy’s nominations were announced by actors Harvey Guillen, “What We do in the Shadows”, and Brenda Song, “Running Point”, from Wolf Theater on television to North Hollywood.

The 77th Emmy Awards will be organized by Nate Bargatze and Broadcast Live on Sunday September 14 at 8 p.m. He / 5 p.m. PT on CBS, as well as Stream Live and On Demand via Select Packages on Paramount +.
