Woody Harrelson Rejects Real Detective Meeting With Matthew McConaughey

Woody Harrelson has some bad news for “True Detective” fans. Speaking on the “Today” show while promoting his new movie, “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” the actor said there was “zero chance” of reuniting with Matthew McConaughey for a new season focusing on Season 1 protagonists Rust Cohle and Marty Harty. Both actors were nominated for Emmys for their roles in the first season, which aired in winter 2014 on HBO.

“A lot of people want to know if there will ever be another ‘True Detective’ with you and Matthew McConaughey,” said “Today” co-host Dylan Dreyer. “[McConaughey] in fact, he said he’d be interested if “Woody and I think it’s good enough.” It wouldn’t even be a choice. Would you like to do another one?

“Matthew is so funny,” Harrelson responded. “In all honesty, never. Not a chance… Because it went well. I love that it happened the way it did, and if anything, doing another season, I think, would tarnish it.”

“True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto said on the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast in May that he had an idea for a new story that would bring back the characters of Rust Cohle and Marty Harty. McConaughey said Variety shortly after, he would be ready to return depending on the scenario.

“We had success that first season,” McConaughey said. “But if it was a script like that, with that fire and originality, I would do it. And you talk about monologues. Well, Rust Cohle had a monologue. He spoke with everything he had in him, and he didn’t care whether you listened or not. There’s freedom in that.”

Pizzolatto described his idea for a new season of Rust-Marty’s “True Detective” as “again character-driven. … But it’s not something I wrote or anything. It’s just that I had that in mind. And we talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to that. It’s just a question of whether it would ever happen or not.”

Apparently Harrelson isn’t too interested after all. Watch the “Today” actor’s full interview in the video below.
