This message contains spoilers For the final of season 3 of “Foundation”.
“Foundation” is one of the best science fiction programs on Apple TV +, which says a lot because the streamer has some of the best science fiction programs in the world. It is a phenomenal adaptation of the series of monumental science fiction books by Isaac Asimov of the same name, constantly remixing the source material to become his own thing while capturing the essence of books. To his best, “Foundation” resembles what Asimov would do if he had actually planned the series from the start and did it in 2025 rather than in the 1950s.
We can say that the two biggest changes, and the best “foundation” have made, was the introduction of the genetic dynasty – three clones intended to represent the “imperishable permanence” of the Galactic Empire – and Demerzel (Laura Birn), an enigmatic robot aid of the emperors. The three emperors are simply a hoe to watch, but Demerzel steals the show every time it is on the screen like the robot apparently without emotion, calculating and eternal.
However, the more we learn about Demerzel and its history with the genetic dynasty, the more the “foundation” adds a level of tragedy to its history. This aspect is not in books, but feels a lot on the point with the writing of Asimov. His kind of Stockholm robotic syndrome, where his programmed devotion to emperors has really turned into a form of love, was fascinating and poignant.
Season 3 increased the putting on the fully exploring the bottom frame of Demerzel independently of the Cléons, revealing its role in the Wars, the creation of the Empire and the fall of robots. This scenario also coincided with the best story about the emperors, Lee Pace playing a version of the Emperor Cleon that fans affectionately nicknamed the Dude brother because of his carefree attitude and his long hair and the beard that recall the main character in “The Big Lebowski”. Throughout the season, Pace’s brother was humiliated, and towards the end, he had a huge change of heart that inspired him to try Demerzel of his program freely and to help him find his genre.
Unfortunately, it was not supposed to be, because in the final of the season, Brother Mec and Demerzel meet tragic ends.
Speaking with / film before the final of season 3, the showrunner David S. Goyer said that he wanted this season of “Foundation” to be “on the real fall of the Empire and the freedom of Demerzel”, as well as the “redemption of the day”.
