Wolves vs Manchester United – Lineups, Stats and Preview

Wolves vs Manchester United Match Preview

Manchester United travel to Molineux on Monday evening with a chance to extend their unbeaten away run in the Premier League to five matches.

Ruben Amorim’s side have taken eight points from their last four away matches – a stark contrast to the struggles of bottom-placed Wolves, who have managed just two points at home all season.

United’s inconsistency continues to frustrate fans. Just when they seem to be gaining momentum, another setback follows, whether it was a home defeat to 10-man Everton or a flat performance in a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened West Ham.

Diogo Dalot’s composed strike against the Irons looked to be the winner until Soungoutou Magassa equalized late on, prompting former club captain Roy Keane to deliver a scathing assessment of the team’s attitude.

This result left United eighth at the end of Gameweek 14, although they could slip into the bottom half by the time they kick off on Monday.

Despite this, their away form has been a reliable source of points. United have beaten Liverpool and Crystal Palace and held Nottingham Forest and Tottenham to a draw in recent weeks.

Historically, they rarely lose to the team bottom of the Premier League, although Wolves have achieved this feat twice – most recently in 2011.

Few people at Molineux will expect a repeat. Wolves remain in deep trouble, still stuck on two points from 14 matches and on course to fall short of Derby County’s infamous 11-point campaign of 2007-08. Rob Edwards has failed to halt the slide since taking charge, and Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest extended their losing streak in all competitions to eight matches.

Wolves now sit 12 points behind 17th-placed Leeds and the numbers are just as bleak in attack. They have failed to score in five consecutive league matches – the longest scoreless streak in their history – and have lost seven Premier League matches in a row.

Their only glimmer of hope comes from last season’s two wins against United, although the Red Devils have not lost consecutive league matches at Molineux for 45 years.

Team news for Wolves vs Manchester United

United are hoping to have Matthijs de Ligt at their disposal after missing the West Ham game with a late injury. Dalot should also be fit although he appears to have taken a knock during this match. However, Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko remain sidelined until the end of the month.

Matheus Cunha, returning from a head injury against West Ham, faces his former club. The striker contributed to 21 Premier League goals for Wolves last season, but has just one so far in a United shirt.

Wolves will be without midfielder Joao Gomes, who is serving a one-match suspension for accumulated bookings.

Substitute Marshall Munetsi is also out with a calf injury, leaving Jean-Ricner Bellegarde to find himself in a deeper midfield role alongside Andre.

The hosts will test Ladislav Krejci, Fer Lopez and Hugo Bueno closer to kick-off, but Rodrigo Gomes, Leon Chiwome and Daniel Bentley remain unavailable due to injury.

Wolves’ search for a first league win continues and, with key midfielders unavailable, they risk being overwhelmed in central areas. United’s away form has been one of their few reliable traits this season, and Amorim’s side should have enough of it to secure a routine victory against a Wolves side heading for the drop.
