Why Klopp chose Nunnez on Isak

The former manager of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, chose to sign the striker Darwin Nunez before Alexander Isak in the summer of 2022 – according to the former research director of Reds Ian Graham.
Liverpool spent 64 million pounds sterling on Nunez de Benfica – costs that could reach 85 million pounds sterling – while Newcastle spent a similar amount to sign Isak of Real Sociedad in the same transfer window.
Nunez scored 25 goals in the Premier League for the Reds and seems to leave Anfield this summer – while Isak has 54 in 86 Premier League games for the Magpies.

Addressing the Financial Times, Graham said that Klopp preferred the Uruguay striker.
He said: “The two players, if you look at the best young centrals in Europe, they would be number one and two – or two and three but [Erling] Haaland was going [Manchester] City and out of our price range.
“Jurgen preferred Nunez. It would be very rude on my part to say: “It is terrible that Jurgen had his choice”, while in the past, Jürgen had been convinced by me and my colleagues of a different choice. »»

Graham said Klopp had been convinced in the past to sign Mo Salah – a decision that turned out to be a master stroke.
Nunez was strongly linked to a passage to Serie A Champions Napoli this summer. He only started eight championship games last season and scored five times in the Premier League while Arne Slot’s team won the title.
Isak continues to be linked to the largest clubs in Europe – including Liverpool and Arsenal – but will have football in the Champions League this season with the Eddie Howe team.
