In 2022, a new sitcom CBS was announced that would see Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. playing a father-son duo. At the time, Deadline described “Poppa’s House” as “an association of sitcom on the dream screen [that’s been] Two decades in progress, “and even if it may have been a bit exaggerated, it was at least exciting to hear that Wayans Sr. returned to network comedy after his successful ABC series” My Wife and Kids. “This sitcom in the early 2000s ran for five seasons and became part of the millennium comedy. His real son, with whom he had undeniable comic chemistry, as evidenced by their previous collaborations.
“My Wife and Kids” also presented Wayans Jr. in a recurring role, before the actor played in comedy shows like “Happy Endings” and “New Girl”. He then directed the Sitcom CBS “Happy Together”, which, unfortunately, lasted only one season. “Poppa’s House”, however, seemed to be able to push beyond a single season, especially since “Happy Together” had presented the comic chemistry of Wayans and Wayans Jr. in an episode entitled “as father, as son”.
Co-written by Wayans and executive producer Kevin Hench, “Poppa’s House” played the alum “Saturday Night Live” (which was dismissed, then brought back in season 11) as a divorced animator of Talk-Radio “Poppa” Fulton, who lives in the suburbs right next to his adult son, Junior (Wayans Jr). At work, Poppa finds himself in challenge by a new co-host in the form of Guru Ivy of mutual aid (Atkins essence), while Junior finds himself further from his dream of becoming a director in order to satisfy the desires of his wife for a stable life together. The father and the son often meet because of their life situation, Poppa frequently finding the peace of his family life broken by drop-ins from his family and his neighbors. As decent a sufficient premise that it may seem, “Poppa’s house” has finally proved to be as durable as “happy together”, CBS taking the catch after a single season.
The notes of the house of poppa were not good enough to justify a renewal
“Poppa’s House” made its debut on October 21, 2024 and ran for 18 episodes until April 28, 2025. In March, Deadline reported that the sitcom remained “on the bubble”, which essentially means that it was in a sort of purgatory by which it had not been canceled but had not yet been renewed for a new season. In other words, writing was about the wall at that time. According to the point of sale, CBS was impatient to reduce the program’s budget and discussions on this subject were underway. But at the same time, the network would have weighed “Poppa’s House” against three pilots – “DMV”, “Zarna” and the spin -off of “The Neighbourhood” – as far as it was to become a single niche of comedy for the calendar 2025-26.
A month later, CBS officially announced that he had decided not to renew the series. According to the deadline,, “DMV” was the show that won the only comedy niche for the new season, which means “Poppa’s House” and the other pilots have been rebuilt. It therefore seems that, although there were initial plans to reduce the manufacturing cost of the Wayans sitcom, the notes of the show were simply not good enough to justify a renewal. Deadline reported that the notes of the show were lower than the other three other series of CBS comedy which had been renewed: “Ghosts”, “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” too and “The Neighbourhood”.
Season 1 was not saved by criticism, and was certainly not one of the worst sitcoms of all time. In fact, the show received a perfectly good criticism score on Rotten Tomatoes. Robert Lloyd of Los Angeles Times assumed that “the ways spend a good time obvious together” while Aramid Tinubu de Variety thought that distribution had “chemistry in the shovel”. Here again, one of the jokes of “Poppa’s House” involved Ivy hindsight to a “Asinine” comment from Poppa, only for the character of Wayans to answer, “first of all, my ** Ain’t a nine, it’s a 10.” So, yes, not the worst, but certainly not the best sitcom of all time.
What the actors and the team said about the cancellation of Poppa’s house
Until now, the only person involved in “Poppa’s House” to publicly approach the cancellation of the program is Damon Wayans. In an Instagram article, Wayans qualified the short -term series as a short -term “beautiful journey”, before thanking all the people involved in the project, from his comrades to the writer and the team. He continued:
“A very special thank you to my son, Damon Jr. working next to you was one of the greatest joys of my life. And my incredible family, brothers and sisters, children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, who showed up as writings, guest stars and creative forces that you have made this journey even more significant. And laugh with a family. “
Obviously, making the “Poppa house” meant a lot for the actor, who continued saying that even if the show had been canceled, he “left with deep gratitude, friendships for life and unforgettable memories”.
The history of television is strewn with short -term sitcoms, many of which have been fired before they even finished their first series of episodes. The short -term sitcom in which David Schwimmer played before “Friends”, for example, lasted only a few episodes before Fox took the catch, and ABC canceled a sitcom Heather Graham after a single episode. As such, the Wayans family can be proud to have had a season with decent notes and solid criticism. It was simply not enough to keep them by air at the time.
