While the REY movie is on hold, a long-delayed STAR WARS spinoff could be back on the table

With Star Wars Finally returning to the big screen, Lucasfilm plans to explore what happened after 2019. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The “La Haute République” initiative proved disappointing; the books and comics didn’t strike a chord with fans, and The Acolyte was canceled after one season on Disney+. There is only limited narrative potential in exploring the gaps between each previous film and a post-Episode IX the setting creates something of a blank slate for the filmmakers.

Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is developing a film around Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker. Taking place 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalkerit is written by George Nolfi, who replaced Steven Knight, who himself succeeded the writing duo Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, follow the news that Disney has decided not to move forward The Hunt for Ben Solo with Adam Driver, scooper @MyTimeToShineH reports that the Rey movie is now on hold until Lucasfilm approves Nolfi’s script.

The project was slow to move forward first during Star Wars Celebration in 2023. Lucasfilm is clearly struggling to decipher the story, but this era will be explored in 2027. Star Wars: Starfighter (which should feature an appearance by Rey).

Yet as one film is put on hold, another may be back in active development. According to Daniel Richtman, the Lando The feature film starring Donald Glover is being worked on again by Lucasfilm. The plan was for it to be a Disney+ series, although it has since evolved into a film.

“I just want it to be fun.” the actor spoke about his plans for Lando Calrissian last year. “As a Star Wars fan, I think it’s important that we have fun. It’s very difficult to have fun right now. It’s difficult because there are very serious things going on and those are the only things that connect us, weirdly.”

“So I understand why things are serious, but I think part of the human experience is that we have a responsibility to have fun,” » added Glover. “And I just feel like we’re lacking in that area.”

He then emphasized that although he likes Star Wars franchise, it is “can be very serious. Sometimes it’s way too serious. Everything that has to do with the Skywalkers is so serious. And I feel like people can relate to that, and he’s probably like, ‘Man, this war sucks.’ I need money, and I think everyone can relate to that.”

Neither the Rey film nor the Lando-led project have confirmed release dates.
