Which one do you hydrate best?

It is a common hypothesis that water is more moisturizing than sparkling water, but dietitists say that it is not entirely precise.

Is spark or water more moisturizing?

“Research shows that the spark and still water hydrate the body also, without significant difference in the retention of liquids or the production of urine,” said Callie Krajcir, RD, a recorded dietitian specializing in the health of the bladder based in Breinigsville, in Pennsylvania. “I usually tell people to choose the option they appreciate and drink more.”

In other words, whether you prefer your flat or sparkling water, the two will keep your hydration levels exceeded as long as you drink enough water per day, about 11.5 to 15.5 cups, depending on the personal factors.

“Sparkling waters can provide hydration to those who do not drink ordinary water differently,” said Trista Best, MPH, RDN, LD, dietitian registered in the health service of the County of Whitfield in Dalton, in Georgia.

Should you choose motionless or sparkling water?

Although the two forms of water are also moisturizing, your personal health objectives and conditions could make you better.

If you replace soda

“Sparkling water can be an excellent substitute for sodas, energy drinks or other drinks rich in added sugar and caffeine,” said Krajcir.

The choice of sparkling water on a sweet soda can help you avoid health problems as poor blood sugar control and a disturbed metabolic function.

However, certain sparkling waters are better than others, so it is important to be aware of your drink of choice.

“Many varieties of sparkling water contain flavors, sugars or artificial sweeteners added, so be sure to read the labels,” added Krajcir. Opt for drinks without these artificial additives.

If you have bladder or intestine problems

For some people, carbonation may have come with drawbacks.

“Sparkling water can be embarrassing for people with bladder conditions such as interstitial cystitis and hyperactive bladder,” said Krajcir. “I suggest eliminating sparkling water for two to three weeks and reintroducing it to see if it triggers symptoms.”

She also noted that people with SCI or acid reflux can experience aggravated symptoms of carbonated drinks due to the gas they introduce into the digestive tract.

If you worry about the PFAS

There are also potential environmental and chemical considerations. “Certain seltzer or gas waters contain chemicals called par- and polyfluoroalkyle (PFAS) substances,” said Best.

These artificial compounds can accumulate in the body over time and have been linked to health problems such as liver disease, kidney disease and cancer. To avoid these chemicals, respect the marks that label their packaging without PFAS.

What it means for you

If you decide between sparkling compared to motionless water, the good news is that you can choose the one you like the most – you hydrate yourself as well. But that does not mean that the choice is completely neutral. If you have intestinal problems, bladder sensitivity or if you prefer to avoid synthetic chemicals and artificial additives, you may want to lean towards motionless water or choose your sparkling brand with care.
