The Arizona Diamondbacks were among the many pretenders of the rumor for Baltimore Orioles who struck the third goal Manny Machado on the deadline for the MLB 2018 trade, and a recent history of ESPN discovered a moment of sliding doors which continues to have an impact on the club.
Diamondbacks director general Mike Hazen told Jesse Rogers d’Espn that the best Jazz Chisholm Jr. hope would have been in an agreement for Machado, a business that never materialized. Instead, the Los Angeles Dodgers landed Machado and went to the World Series, where they lost against the Boston Red Sox. Machado signed a record contract of $ 300 million with the Padres of San Diego during the next off -season.
In Hazen’s words:
“We tried to ensure that Manny Machado des Orioles in 2018 and Jazz Chisholm would have been in this business. We did not exchange jazz there, but that made us Zac Gallen in 2019. We do not get Gallen if we are doing this business for Machado, so you never know.”
Arizona exchanged Chisholm against Gallen straight with the Marlins of Miami on the deadline of 2019, a decision which paid dividends for both parties.
It is the clearest and most pressing ripple effect for diamonds. A business for Gallen, a young and promising launcher controllable until 2025, would it have been possible without Chisholm treating?
The rabbit hole goes further than that, however, and it starts with what could have happened in 2018.
What if the D-Backs have negotiated for Manny Machado?
Machado was treated on July 18 during the star break this season for a pack of players: Rylan Bannon, Yusniel Diaz, Dean Kremer, Zach Pop and Breyvic Valera. The dodgers did well there since Kremer is the only player they exchanged who produced a positive BWAR at 4.9.
At the time, Machado had an oblique bar line of .315 / .387 / .575 with 24 circuits and 65 points produced, a dominant first half.
The Diamondbacks at 53-44 were 0.5 game from the Dodgers for the head of NL West and 0.5 match at the back of the second point of the NL joker.
Their attack had taken a step back after losing JD Martinez because they ranked 17th in marked points. The pitch staff were in the top 10 authorized points, directed by All-Stars Patrick Corbin and Zack Greinke.
The third goal was an area of need because Jake Lamb, following a star campaign in 2017, had a difficult 2018 campaign spoiled by injuries. He entered the stars break with a .678 OPS, and his season was about to end on a shoulder injury before the deadline.
The day the Arizona placed the lamb on the injured list, he exchanged the third goal of Minnesota Twins Eduardo Escobar. In this agreement, Minnesota acquired the future avant-garde Jhoan Duran.
Machado was good (.825 ops, 13 circuits) in 66 games with Los Angeles but not as Elite as in his success at the start of the season. Perhaps Machado would have performed better in the hunting field for strikers against a launcher park in Los Angeles.
Escobar, meanwhile, was ok for the D-Backs the rest of the path with an oblique bar line. 268 / .327 / .444 and eight circuits in 54 games. He signed a three -year extension during the following off -season and reached a record of 35 career circuits in 2019.
The D-Backs ended up bending with an 8-19 September, while the Dodgers barely survived the Colorado rockies for a division title.
Would having Machado instead of Escobar saved the season? This is impossible to say.
In September of the season, the Diamondbacks were among the worst MLB offensive teams, and the insertion of a player in a programming in shock may have added a spark or failed to make a significant difference.
Escobar has become a solid D-Back player, making a full-fledged team team. Duran, on the other hand, has an MPM of 2.39 and 72 stops with the twins.
In the end, it seems that the events took place positively for the D-Backs, while Gallen became an All-Star and launched at the top of the rotation of Arizona during his pennant race in 2023.
