Tom Cruise faced Lilo & Stitch at the box office once before

The last weekend of the Memorial Day was one for the records while the live action of Disney “Lilo & Stitch” faced “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” at the box office. Overall, the films have collectively helped to establish a new record for the holidays, although it was “Lilo & Stitch” which won the day with a global box office exceeding $ 300 million in a single weekend. Surprisingly, however, this is not the first time that Cruise has been beating the duo that is Lilo and Stitch at the box office, the first match that has shaken completely differently.

In the summer of 2002, Cruise directed Steven Spielberg’s science fiction film “Minority Report”, an adaptation of the “The Minority Report” by author Philip K. Dick. It was one of the most anticipated films of the summer and had a first -rate release date on the calendar. Disney, meanwhile, had a new original 2D 2D functionality that descended the pipeline in the form of (you guessed it!) “Lilo & Stitch”. Directed by Dean Deblois and Chris Sanders, it also had to be released in theaters in June the same day as this cruise / big -budget cruelberg team.

“Minority Report” and “Lilo & Stitch” both arrived in theaters on June 21, 2002. In addition to being reinforced by very positive criticisms, the films also took advantage of the fact that they were targeting a resolutely different audience. Please note, the landscape of general cinema was far from the one we know today. At the time, “Star Wars: Episode II-Attack of the Clone” was at its sixth weekend of release, while “Spider-Man” by Sam Raimi had become the first film to have increased more than $ 100 million in a single weekend in the United States only eight weeks earlier, just to provide a certain context.

What resulted was one of the closest battles for a number one film at the box office that we have ever seen. In the end, however, it is Cruise and Spielberg who would win the day against the charming offer and adapted to Disney families.

Tom Cruise won the first force test at the box office with Lilo & Stitch

“Minority Report” opened its doors on 3,001 screens in North America and opened $ 35.6 million nationally. Meanwhile, “Lilo & Stitch” opened its doors on 3,191 screens at 35.2 million dollars, losing first place on the charts by the narrowest margins. The following weekend, “Mr. Deeds” by Adam Sandler would take over in the front row, while Cruise and Disney were in another very narrow race for second place. Again, “Minority Report” has just won with a second executive of $ 21.59 million, while “Lilo & Stitch” was satisfied with the third with $ 21.51 million.

In the end, “Minority Report” ended his race with $ 132 million at the national level to go with $ 262.3 million abroad for a large total of $ 358.3 million worldwide. “Lilo & Stitch” finished with $ 145.7 million at the national level and $ 127.3 million abroad for world transport of $ 273.1 million. In the end, it is the international public who presents himself for the cruise at the height of his powers as a movie star who helped him and Spielberg with the day.

In the here and now, “Mission: Impossible – the last calculation” has opened up to more than $ 200 million in the world, which has proven that Cruise always has a mass attractiveness in the world. In this case, however, the film at hand will be hampered by a budget of $ 400 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made. The reimagination of “Lilo & Stitch”, on the other hand, was designed for $ 100 million and is underway to perhaps exceed $ 1 billion when everything is said and done. This is not a competition in the 2025 match.

But the box office is more than what has won and lost. This is a fascinating illustration of the lasting attraction of a film star and Disney’s first steps towards the construction of “Lilo & Stitch” in a shocking franchise. One brings a great action to the table while the other brings a much necessary entertainment and focused on the family on the big screen. It’s just fascinating that, 23 years later, the same players met on the board on the same weekend.

“Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible – the final calculation” are now in theaters.
