Beyond the statistics, West Ham’s disjointed and uninspiring performances this season go well beyond the sacking of Graham Potter, with Nuno still searching for his first win since taking charge.
The Hammers’ 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest, which turned out to be Nuno’s final game in charge of his former club, seems like a very distant memory.
After much tinkering with his first team in the last two matches, with Lucas Paqueta used as a false nine to compensate for the absence of Niclas Füllkrug, Nuno is yet to discover West Ham’s winning formula.
It doesn’t get any easier for West Ham either, with high-flying Newcastle, who have won five of their last six matches in all competitions, awaiting them at the London Stadium next.
January is expected to be a lifeline for West Ham, with Nuno reportedly urging the club’s hierarchy to make three signings in the form of a new defender, midfielder and striker (GiveMeSport).
Nuno has also been told funds will be available for West Ham to spend (Sky Sports), but a more pressing issue may be convincing their current star players to stay at Rush Green.
The Times reported this week that Paqueta wants to leave West Ham in January.
That being said, the player himself quickly posted a cryptic message on social media following the rumors, which seemed like an attempt to squash that noise in its tracks.
After Paqueta, some whispers about a potential Bowen exit are starting to intensify.
The Irons captain is absolutely vital to Nuno and their superstar player, and West Ham rewarded the former Hull City winger with a long-term deal until 2030 over two years ago.
However, the threat of relegation sparks reports that rival clubs are looking to entice Bowen.
Tottenham are reportedly prepared to pay £53 million for Bowen’s services, but much will depend on the player’s stance on leaving a club he clearly adores.
Jarrod Bowen’s stance on West Ham exit amid Tottenham interest
According to TEAMtalk and reporter Dean Jones, the 28-year-old’s feelings about leaving are pretty simple.
Jones reports that while the east Londoners have no interest in selling him, Bowen could be willing to leave West Ham if they are relegated at the end of the season.
Losing the England international straight after losing in the league would be a very bitter pill to swallow for West Ham supporters, and it makes January all the more imperative.
Right now, Nuno’s side simply don’t have the quality or depth in every position to force their way out of the bottom three, with the Portuguese seemingly looking to keep them afloat long enough to bolster his ranks.
West Ham look out of their depth in all areas, particularly in defence, with Lille star and Brazil international Alexsandro seemingly Nuno’s main centre-back target for January.
Further afield, West Ham have spoken internally about signing Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos as Nuno seeks a box-to-box midfielder, while numerous strikers are already being considered.
