There is no remedy against psoriasis of the scalp, but there are ways to manage its symptoms. “I always remind my patients that they will have to continue to treat it to keep it under control,” said dermatologist Steve Daveluy, MD, an associate professor at the Wayne State University School of Medicine de Detroit.
And, according to Strachan, quickly treating your psoriasis is the best way to reduce your impact on your appearance.
Treatments for psoriasis of the scalp can involve a combination of therapies, including the following:
Topical treatments
The first step in the effectively treatment of psoriasis of the scalp involves removing or lifting thick scales, which helps drugs to penetrate the plates and erase them.
Discounts on a scale These are products “which contain active ingredients, such as salicylic acid, urea, lactic acid or phenol, which are designed to dissolve flakes or skin scales”, explains Strachan. “Another way to soften and loosen the scales of the scalp is to apply oils, lotions, creams or ointments on a wet scalp,” she adds.
Once the drug softens the psoriasis scale, you can remove it carefully with a fine tooth comb or a brush.
“Gently comb the scalp in a light circular movement, holding the almost flat comb against the scalp”, advises Strachan. “Once the ladder is loosened, shampoo is a good way to keep the scale of your scalp and your hair away. But be gentle. Brushing or roots too vigorously can break the skin and cause an infection. It can also break hair with a scalp, causing temporary hair loss.”
Shampoos – with and without drugs against coal tar – are available to treat lesions of the scalp. “We do not actually know exactly how mine tar works, but it is one of the oldest treatments for psoriasis,” explains Dr. Daveluy. “In soft psoriasis of the scalp, it can be the only treatment necessary to keep it under control.”

“Liquid or foam topical medication [like steroids and calcipotriene] are easy to apply on the scalp, ”explains Strachan. But for anyone can have thicker and more curly hair, the application of these topical treatments can be particularly difficult.
Before starting any topical scalp treatment, Strachan suggests applying a drug test patch to a discreet location on your head.
“In some cases, treatments can cause temporary irritation or hair loss,” she says. “Your hair should grow back. But if hair loss persists after treating psoriasis, you should consult a dermatologist. ”
Serious rockets may require the use of oral drugs in conjunction with such topical treatments.
Systemic treatments
Systemic treatments, which operate throughout the body, is often an important part of therapy by psoriasis of the scalp. Biologicals are targeted drugs for psoriasis and are often prescribed if older therapies such as methotrexate (Trexall), oral retinoids and cyclosporin are not recommended by your doctor.
Phototherapy
Ultraviolet light or phototherapy can be used if psoriasis is also on other parts of the body.
Steroid injections
Corticosteroid drug injections may target persistent and itching plates on the scalp. Because these photos can be uncomfortable, a dermatologist can recommend injecting only a few areas until other treatments help.
