The celebration began with the slaves released from Galveston, Texas. Although the proclamation of emancipation released slaves in the south in 1863, it could not be applied in many places after the end of the civil war in 1865.
Laura Smalley, freed from a plantation near Bellville, Texas, remembered in an interview of 1941 that her former master had gone to fight in the civil war and returned home without saying to her slaves what had happened.
“The old master did not say, you know, they were free,” said Smalley at the time. “I think now they say they worked them, six months after that. Six months. And turn them away on June 19. This is why, you know, we celebrate that day. ”
The Union major-general, Gordon Granger, and his troops arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865, with a news that the war was over and that the slaves were now free. It was more than two months after General Confederate Robert E. Lee went to General Union Ulysses S. Grant in Virginia.
Granger gave general order n ° 3, which said: “The inhabitants of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation of the executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This implies an absolute equality of personal rights and the rights of goods between the former masters and the slaves, and the connection presenting Héretofore between them becomes between employers and the work rented. “
The following year, people now free began to celebrate Juneteenth in Galveston. His respect has continued in the country and the world since then. Events include concerts, parades and readings of the emancipation proclamation.
