“We could have talked for hours”

Joe Rogan rejected a guest’s argument that former vice president Kamala Harris would have struggled to get through a three-hour interview – something the president Donald Trump did so just before the 2024 elections.

Actor James McCann joined Rogan on The Joe Rogan Experience for a Thursday episode that at one point touched on Rogan’s marathon interview with Trump and his near-interview with Harris. Rogan supported Trump shortly before the election, but has since become more critical of the president on issues like mass deportations.

“No questions beforehand, no preparation, I didn’t pee, I sat there for three hours,” Rogan recalled of the Trump interview. “He’s almost 80 years old. If he was wearing a diaper, respect him, but the guy just hung out for three hours. Does that mean I agree with everything he does? Hell no. Of course not.”

“But he was able to be himself for three hours. He was able to talk for three hours where Kamala wouldn’t. She wouldn’t,” McCann responded.

“She could have done it. I’m telling you, man, it would have been great,” Rogan insisted.

McCann added to his argument by saying he was unimpressed by an appearance by Harris on That of Stephen Colbert late night show.

“I watched her for six minutes on Stephen Colbert and I don’t think she could do it,” he said.

Rogan argued that shows like Colbert’s are “handicapped from the start” because of time limits, commercial breaks and potential audience influence.

“You only have seven minutes before you have to go to commercial, or whatever. You can’t do that. It’ll take me seven minutes to ask her what she likes to cook… I want to know if there’s anything she regrets doing, what did she learn from this time, is it harder to be vice president than you thought?” he said.

Rogan said he would have wanted to ask personal questions about expectations versus reality when it comes to the job of vice president. He also wanted to discuss money in politics, particularly companies supporting candidates with large sums of money.

“We’re not pretending that people don’t spend a lot of money to influence your decisions, so what impact does that have…we could have talked about it for hours,” he said.

Rogan and Harris each explained why an interview never happened. Rogan had rejected the idea of having Trump for years and when he finally opened up to the idea, he said he tried to get both candidates on board.

According to Rogan, the Harris camp proposed a date but it would have required travel and would have been limited to one hour. Rogan also claimed the interview required not talking about marijuana legalization, a common topic on the podcast.

Harris gave his side of the story in his book 107 days. She claimed there was a date scheduled to do Rogan, but he marked it as a “personal day,” a day where he interviewed Trump. Harris further claimed that Rogan agreed to interview him in Detroit, but he requested that it be moved to Austin, Texas, where his podcast studio is located. Harris called it a “big ask” during a presidential campaign. Trump eventually made his way to the studio for his interview.

“Even though most of my team thought doing the interview was a gamble, and others were adamant that it was a bad idea, I really wanted to do it,” Harris wrote. “A podcast wasn’t going to win or lose the election. But Rogan’s audience was young and male. I wanted to reach these guys who otherwise might not have heard of me.”
