When Charlie Cox returned as Daredevil in the Disney+ sequel series Daredevil: Born Againthere was a lot to love – the returning Hell’s Kitchen hero, Vincent D’Onofrio back in fearsome form as Kingpin, and some shocking turns along the way. (Foggy, no!) But the series also bore some hallmarks of its tricky production: Season 1 was retooled from a very different initial iteration of Born againwould be a more law-focused case-of-the-week procedural, without many of the key ingredients of the Netflix original series. Now, heading into Season 2, the game is gutted: Daredevil is back, engaged in a massive battle of wills with Kingpin, and Hell’s Kitchen is at stake.
“The landscape was open and it was so liberating,” says producer Sana Amanat. Empire “For Matt Murdock, that means building an army of vigilantes, while physically weakened after being shot by – of all people – Wilson Fisk. As for Fisk, now mayor of New York, he’s at the height of his power, suppressing the caped crusaders with his “Safer Streets Initiative.” “What does it mean for Fisk when he’s gotten everything he wants?” teases Amanat of where Born again go. “When you give a person whose thirst cannot be quenched his most precious treasure, is it enough? Or is he clutching his treasure too tightly?”
At least Matt has some backup this time around, in the form of the return of Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones. Not that she’s dying to join any club. “[Jones] isn’t necessarily a team-up type of person,” Amanat says. “So the reason she’s back is because it feels like it’s very personal. She brings edginess and lightness – Daredevil can be very dark and dramatic, and she cuts through the BS in a really fun way. Get ready for Born again to be… well, born again.
