Watson Star Reveals If Sherlock Holmes Is Really Alive

After the convoluted explanation of the return of Sherlock Holmes in Watson Last episode, one of the stars of the series finally puts an end to the rumors about his death. Robert Carlyle, who plays the famous detective in the medical drama, reveals the character’s current status.
In an interview with TV Insider, the actor said he sincerely believed Holmes was alive. His response puts to rest all the theories floating around the internet that Watson was simply hallucinating and that the detective is just a figment of his imagination created to help him deal with all the trauma in his life.
However, although Carlyle stated that he personally believed that Holmes was alive, his response was still rather cryptic. “Well, as far as I’m concerned, he’s alive and well. The general idea of this is a bit like a Sherlock Watson type thing; it’s a mystery in itself for viewers to try to figure this out.“
It’s safe to say that his response probably wasn’t enough to put an end to all the conspiracy theories floating around the internet. Although he has denied any type of deception, his comments retain an air of uncertainty. Telling viewers they still have to figure it out after seemingly answering the question definitively will likely spark a backlash among fans looking for the truth.
Carlyle also said Watson was probably as confused as the audience. He said the main character probably didn’t trust what he saw or heard when he found out Holmes was still “alive.”
Why should he believe it? I don’t know if he does. I think at the end of this second episode, I don’t think this is resolved one way or the other. I still think Watson is very suspicious of what’s going on, of what this guy really is. [Laughs] You’re not sure what’s going on there. So I don’t know if they should believe it, I think, to answer your question, and I think the audience would also be right to think, “I’m not too sure. Is it fake? What’s going on?”
Watson is based on the iconic literary character of Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut), from the Sherlock Holmes books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The series is set in modern times and sees the protagonist move from solving crimes to decoding medical mysteries.
New episodes of Watson air every Monday at 10:00 p.m. ET and 7:00 p.m. PT on CBS.
