Wasim Jaffer does not agree with Shubman Gill as a candidate for the Test captain of India | Cricket news

Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer suggested that Shubman Gill should lead the India test team at the next tour in England when Jasprit Bumrah needs rest. The captain’s debate intensified following the recent retirement of Rohit Sharma, India preparing for a series of five games from June 20 in Headingley.Jaffer has expressed his point of view on the social media platform X, declaring: “I think Bumrah is a choice of automatic captain, unless he wants responsibility. He should be the captain with Gill as VC – intervening each time Bumrah needs rest. In this way, Gill could also be prepared without the pressure of being the captain full.”Gill, currently at the head of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, is one of several candidates taken into account for the test captain, alongside Bumrah, Kl Rahul and Rishabh Pant.Bumrah has already led India in three tests, including a victory in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar trophy series last year in Australia. However, Bumrah’s physical condition remains a concern for the tour in England. He suffered a back injury during the final test in Sydney, preventing him from Bowling in the second round. The same back injury, which required surgery at the beginning of 2023, made Bumrah miss the Champions Trophy campaign in India in Dubai.
