Washington Sundar, the spin-bowling all-rounder of the young India national cricket team, shook the stumps of star Australian national cricket team wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey on Thursday (October 23).

He had missed the first match of the series due to Sheffield Shield duties and was replaced by Josh Philippe in the team. Philippe impressed everyone with his 37 points and played a vital role in Australia’s dominant victory.

However, Philippe was dropped when Alex Carey returned to the setup. Expectations were sky-high from Carey as Australia chased a target of 265 runs in 50 overs.

However, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman disappointed his team with a poor batting performance against the Shubman Gill-led side. He came out to bat at No. 5 and was cleaned up by Washington Sundar in the 27th over.

On the last ball of the over, Washington Sundar bowled a 95 kmph full length delivery to Carey, who attempted a poor sweep shot. Carey came down and was early enough to sweep, which led to the ball going past his bat and rattling the stumps. Alex Carey took a long walk back to the pavilion after scoring 9 runs from 17 balls.

Shubman Gill fails miserably with the bat

Gill has not had a good start to his captaincy career in all formats. He lost his first match as captain in T20I, Test and ODI, becoming the second Indian after Virat Kohli to achieve this unwanted feat.

After becoming full-time Test captain, Gill lost his first match at the helm, but overall put in an outstanding performance with the bat in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.

Shubman Gill finished the series as the leading run-scorer, scoring 754 runs at an average of 75.40 while no other batter even touched the 600-run mark. Furthermore, India managed to draw 2-2 in the five-match Test series.

However, his debut as an ODI skipper was more horrendous. Besides losing the first match, he also performed poorly with the bat, scoring only 10 runs before taking a long walk back to the pavilion.

Gill was expected to bounce back in the second game and lead the team from the front, but that didn’t happen. In the 7th over himself, the Indian ODI skipper was dismissed by Xavier Bartlett for 9 balls 9 runs.

On the first ball of the 7th over, Xavier Bartlett bowled a full delivery to Gill on off stump, and the Indian batter charged down the track aiming to smash him at mid-off.

However, Gill failed to make a good connection with the ball and hit it straight towards Mitchell Marsh at mid-off, who took a good catch.
