Vicky Krieps on Jim Jarmusch, not preparing for roles, abandoning the phone

Vicky Krieps is one of the stars presented during the 59th edition of this year of Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF). During the opening evening of the Czech festival, she received her president’s prize at a huge ovation. She also introduced a projection of Anna Cazenave Cambet Love me tenderWith Crrys, in the Czech city of the Spa.
And she took the time to think about her acting career, including her next film with Jim Jarmusch, social media, AI and much more in a major discussion during a round table with journalists.
During her speech of acceptance, the actress had said to the loving crowd that she was never cool. Asked about this comment, she explained to the Round Press Table: “It’s true. Of course, I put people’s ideas because they think I’m cool, because I am an actor and I do what I want, I say my opinion, and it’s cool. But the truth is, it’s a journey. However, I did not try to be different.
Krieps continued by sharing a story of his time at school. “I would have been happy to integrate myself, but I did not do it. I did not continue to be special,” she said. “I remember carrying a tie, because I thought:” Why does no one do that? ” For me, it’s just a beautiful clothing. This is essentially what I was trying to say. »»
Krieps also shared his reflections on what motivates the actors. “I think most actors have a traumatized childhood and they try to heal themselves,” she said. “This is why they become actors, and then it is a question of how much you treat this. How honestly do you share with people who watch you suffer to become a person. Life is to become yourself. And to become yourself, you have to suffer. It’s like removing the skin after the skin.
This led to a debate on social media. “There is a big false idea, especially nowadays, when you have Instagram or social media and internet and these things,” Krieps said. “Not that it is bad, but a large part is bullshit, because it tells a kind of celebrity tale, which is not true. Celebrities are generally people who are stuck in another role that has been given to them, which is” now you are famous “.”

Given the various famous roles that she has assured during her career so far, describing both historical and fictitious characters, what is Krieps’ secret to nail her roles? His answer may surprise you. “I actually choose not to prepare myself. And it is a conscious choice, because what I try to avoid is that it becomes the exercise of Vicky Krieps, the actress, and to say: “Look at what extent I did my duties. I really walk like someone from the 1800s. Or: I really speak like Igeborg Bachmann. Because for me, so I dropped the public, because I take this moment when I really remove my skin, and I really try to find something.
That said, she also suggested that actors can have “two brains” or use two parts of their brain. “A brain is still doing homework,” she said. “So the minute I know I play [Austrian Empress] Sissi, everything I see around me who is Sissi, I will absorb, and it will calculate. When she played the Austrian author Ingeborg Bachmann in Margarethe von Trotta Ingeborg Bachmann – Travel in the desertKrieps, however, did not seek interviews with her. “I didn’t even want to listen to him to speak. I think I heard him speak once before preparing the film, “she said. “And the crazy thing, and it happened to me several times, the brother who is still alive came to me and was in shock because he did not understand why I spoke like his sister. He was like: “How did you know?” It was not only about the voice, it was also certain movements and things that people did not know, but he knew it.
Krieps concluded: “We all know that with great musicians, there is something that makes the way they play different things, and it has to do with something that they don’t really control themselves. And I think with the actors, it’s the same thing. You can open up certain different types of knowledge that does not belong to you.”
In this context, Krieps also shared something that she fears in particular. “A fear that I have always is [that of] The impostor, whom someone will say, “Oh, look at him just pretending:” Because I’m not her, “she said.
Asked to try to feel his way in roles and avoid information on the characters and avoid distractions of digital and information ages when the Internet, mobile phones and other technologies release the attention of people, Krieps offered that she was trying to adopt an alternative approach to all this. “I think what I do is my kind of silent resistance. I’m really giving in to anything, ”she said. “I have to give in to it so that it is part of my life, because it’s just forced to have been. I don’t care if I haven’t seen a text.
Continued the star: “The fight would not work. I mean, I have not had a phone for a year, and it was wonderful. I could do it again. But the fight is very difficult, because the fights always generate only the fights. If you fight something, there will be something that will come back for them or for internet.”

What does it think of AI? “I cannot lose my energy to fight against something that is, for so many people, apparently so important. Yes, they can have an artificial intelligence, but I will just look at the tree, and they can go and they can do what they do, and they can talk about what they are talking about. But I look at the tree myself and will be more interested in the tree. ”
Krieps is obviously happy to avoid all overhaul and noise. “I like silence,” she told journalists. “There is so much noise today that I just believe in silence. And each time I can hold silence in a film, I hold it, and I also hold it for everyone. I invite everyone in silence.”
Could she imagine stopping work as an actress? “I would love,” replied Krieps. “I am a little stuck in this area, so financially. … Having to raise two children and also being the only supplier, because the father of children does not really earn money. I can live from what is already very cool, and I am proud of that. But I couldn’t yet build a [financial] cushion. I would like to take a break and maybe write a script or something. I have it all in me. I just need time and possibility.
Krieps of course had great actor opportunities. And his last is a role in the next Jim Jarmusch Father, mother, sister, brotherWho also features Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits and Charlotte Rampling.
“What I really like, really [Jarmusch] is he just made a film. He is not trying to do the next Jim Jarmusch. He is not trying to go to Cannes, “said Krieps.” He really tries to understand how to make the film on the set, as a student would make a film. And it’s very, very beautiful. It’s very loving, so it was a very loving, very prudent set. Working with Cate Blanchett and Charlotte Rampling were a gift, and we had so much fun. We laughed.
