Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Jr., son of box legend Julio César Chávez, was arrested for expulsion in the United States, the National Department of Security of this country (DHS) announced on Thursday.
The former 39-year-old pen champion was arrested on Wednesday in Studio City, DHS reported in a district of Norte de Los Ángeles, California, a press release reported.
“Chávez is a Mexican citizen and has an arrest warrant in force in Mexico for his participation in organized crime and trafficking in firearms, ammunition and explosives,” said the note.
“We think that Chavez is a member of the Sinaloa cartel, an designated foreign terrorist organization,” he adds.
The Office of the Attorney General in Mexico also confirmed on Wednesday that Chávez Jr. faces an accusation in the country for arms trafficking since 2023 and has been informed of expulsion procedures.
Last Saturday, Chávez Jr., who between 2011 and 2012 was a champion of the pen of the World Boxing Council, lost a television stellar fight against YouTuber and the boxer Jake Paul in Anaheim, California.
Shortly after the announcement, Chávez Jr.’s father, former Mexican champion Julio César Chávez, asked “to guarantee the legal process due and to avoid early judgments”.
“Our family is deeply dismayed by the current situation.

In the DHS press release, the deputy secretary of the DHS Tricia McLaughlin said that “no one is above the law, including the athletes of the world. Our message to any affiliate of the poster in the United States is clear: we will find them and face the consequences. The days of violence unavailable of the posters are over.”
He also criticized the government of former president Joe Biden for not having been expelled when the immigration authorities underlined a “serious threat” in late 2024.
Accusations
According to the DHS, on December 17, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service informed the Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICE) “that Chavez represented a serious threat to public security”.
“However, an entry into the DHS law application system, under the Biden administration, said that Chávez was not a priority for the application of the Immigration Act. On January 4, 2025, the Biden administration enabled Chávez to re-examine the country and granted computer probations to the port of the entry of San Ysidro”, explains the DHS.
The authorities in the United States also accuse him of having made “multiple fraudulent declarations in his request to become a legal permanent resident”, so he determined that he was bad in the country and was subject to expulsion.

According to information disseminated by the DHS, Chávez Jr. sought to obtain the permanent residence of the United States after marrying a citizen of this country.
His partner, according to the authorities, is “linked to the Sinaloa cartel for a previous relationship with the son, already died, of the famous head of poster, Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán”.
It is Frida Muñoz, 37, who was a couple of Edgar Guzmán López, one of the children of El Chapo who died in 2008 in an attack on him in the Mexican city of Culiacán, Sinaloa.
This is why the boxer is a stepfather of Frida Guzmán, daughter of his partner and Edgar Guzmán López, as well as the granddaughter of Chapo Guzmán.
Previously, in January 2024, the police of Los Angeles arrested Chávez Jr. and accused him of illegal possession of arms. The boxer was sentenced by these accusations later in court.
