Trump’s pressure on Ukraine – The Atlantic

Donald Trump continues to pressure Ukraine to accept his administration’s peace proposal, even though the plan favors Russia. On Washington Week with the Atlanticpanelists gathered to discuss what this may suggest about the administration’s evolving international priorities, and more.

If the Ukrainians stopped fighting today, “they wouldn’t have any sort of security guarantee,” said Anne Applebaum, an editor at The Atlanticexplained last night. Without it, “their country is not viable – because who will want to live there or invest there if they know that the war is going to start, you know, next year, next month or in six months? Ukraine needs a reason to believe that the war with Russia is “really, truly over,” she argued.

“The only way to do this is to put pressure not on Ukraine, but on Russia,” Applebaum said. “It’s almost as if the Trump administration doesn’t want to admit, or can’t understand, that war only ends when pressure is put on Russia.” It’s “the most obvious solution to the problem, and it’s one that they simply won’t accept,” she stressed.
