Donald Trump is seriously serious about the candidacy for a third term in violation of the American Constitution, said Californian governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday, warning the Americans to “wake up” to what he described as the president’s flagrant contempt for democratic standards.
“I do not think that Donald Trump wants another election,” said Newsom, a democrat, during a live interview at a summit organized by Politico in Sacramento. “This guy does not believe in free and fair elections.”
Newsom, who has drawn national attention in recent weeks for his merciless train of Trump online and is largely considered to be a future Content to be presidential, said that he had an increasing pile of “Trump 2028” hats – a sharp gift from supporters of the president.
“Do you think he jokes around 2028?” Newsom asked the public. Noting that the ambitious – and controversial – of Trump plans to build a 90,000 square feet in the eastern 90,000 square feet off the White House, filled with a gold garnish which echoes that which he built in his seaside resort of Mar -A -Lago in Florida, Newsom pointed out: “Who spends 200 million dollars on a ball at their home?”
“The rule of law is replaced by the rule of donation,” he said.
The governor previously warned that Trump would try to hang on to power beyond his mandate, as he did in 2020, when he sought to overthrow the victory of Joe Biden with allegation allegations of electoral fraud – a campaign that led to the attack of January 6 against the Capitol by his supporters trying to stop the certification of the results.
But Wednesday, Newsom added a new data point in his case, revealing that Trump had raised the subject at a 90 -minute oval office meeting in February. The governor had gone to Washington to put pressure on federal help on disasters to help Los Angeles recover after fatal fires – a help that Trump newly inaugurated threatened to retain as a political effect. According to Newsom, Trump underlined a portrait of Franklin D Roosevelt, the only American president to serve more than two terms.
“I said,” I know exactly what you mean, “said Newsom. “And then he continued about the third term.”
It is unusual for a political leader, in particular an in -office governor, to disclose the details of an exchange of oval offices with the president. But Newsom appeared imperturbable by the violation of the protocol. “Apparently there are no more rules,” he said.
Although Trump said that he would be an “eight -year president” – and is prohibited by the Constitution to serve a third term – he has repeatedly entertained the possibility. Citing Roosevelt as a precedent, Trump suggested that there could be ways to bypass the 22nd amendment, who declares: “No one will be elected to the president’s office more than twice.”
Questioned in an interview earlier this month if he will arise, Trump said: “No, probably not.” But then he added: “I would like to run. I have the best ballots I have ever had.” (Recent polls have shown that Trump’s approval notes have been falling since his return to the White House, although voters consider his second term more positively than his.)
Pressed on what was discussed elsewhere at the meeting of the Oval Office, Newsom said that the conversation also mentioned what he described as the president’s “Grift Crypto”. According to Newsom, Trump shared that he was surprised to learn that a “same” was “not even a room”.
During the interview, Newsom also urged Democrats to get up and “fight fire with fire” as he did in California with a redistribution proposal that would compensate for a Gerrymander from Trump to obtain five other republican seats in Texas. The Californians will vote in November on the opportunity to temporarily replace the state independent redistribution commission and to adopt new Congress cards which would give Democrats an advantage in five districts of the American Chamber held by Les Républicains.
The more combative posture of Newsom – in particular its online mockery of Trump and its republican allies – seemed to strike a nerve. This week, Trump retaliated, calling the governor of California a “nice guy” who “looks good” but who was also “incompetent”.
Newsom implored the Americans on Wednesday to take threats from Trump seriously.
“Wake up,” he said. “We lose this country in real time. It is not a block, it is not an exaggeration. ”
