Trump says Zelensky hasn’t read latest Russian-Ukrainian peace plan

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said he was “a little disappointed that President Zelensky hasn’t read the proposal yet.”

It is unclear exactly which version of the peace plan Trump was referring to.

“His people love it. But he doesn’t. Russia is OK with it,” Trump said on the red carpet at the Kennedy Center Awards in Washington.

“You know, Russia…I guess I’d rather have the whole country when you think about it. But Russia, I think, agrees with it, but I’m not sure Zelensky agrees with it. His people love it, but they haven’t read it.”

Despite Trump’s suggestion that Moscow was “on board” with the most recent version of the deal, the Kremlin has indicated otherwise.

Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuriy Ushakov, said on Sunday that the US side should make “radical changes” to the draft on “certain issues”.

There was no immediate reaction from Zelensky, but his top negotiator said he would brief the Ukrainian leader on Monday after the Miami talks.

“The main task of the Ukrainian team was to obtain from the American side comprehensive information about their conversation in Moscow and all current draft proposals in order to discuss them in detail with the Ukrainian president,” Rustem Umerov said in a message on X.

“We are working as intensively as possible,” Umerov added.

NBC News reached out to Zelensky’s office for a response to Trump’s comments.

Zelensky said Sunday evening that he spoke with Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who had five hours of talks with Putin in Moscow last week.

“The US envoys are aware of Ukraine’s fundamental positions and the conversation was constructive, although difficult,” Zelensky said.

Ukraine’s leader is in London to rally support from his European allies, as the continent’s leaders jostle for a seat at the negotiating table.
