Trump says that he is reversing veterans’ day as “Victory Day for the First World War”

President Trump said Thursday that he would rename the veterans day on November 11, as “Victory Day for the First World War” and on May 8, widely known as the Ve Day, under the name of “Victory Day for the Second World War”, so that the United States could celebrate its achievements in these conflicts.

“We won the two wars, no one was close to us in terms of strength, bravery or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything,” Trump said in an end of evening article on Truth Social. “We are going to start celebrating our victories again!”

The announcement was not accompanied by an executive decree, and Mr. Trump did not say if he wanted May 8 to be a federal holiday, as the day of veterans. The power to create and modify the holidays is based with the congress.

Trump referred to the celebrations of the American allies in Mark Ve Day, for “Victory in Europe” this year. “We have done more than any other country,” he said, to win an allied victory during the Second World War, a conflict that devastated most of Europe and the enormous parts of Asia.

The commemorations of the day of the VE this year in Great Britain, France, Canada and other American allies will mark 80 years since the official end of the war in Europe after the surrender of Germany.

Trump’s assertion that the United States has done more than any other nation to overcome Nazi Germany could be challenged in Russia, which marks the Soviet victory over German Warning Warm on May 9 of each year. Russian victory day, which aims to honor the 27 million Soviets who died during the war, is a national holiday and one of the most important days on the country’s calendar.

Veterans’ day was originally called the Armistice Day in the United States to mark the end of the World War. The Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday in May, specifically honors those who gave their lives for the country.

In his article Thursday evening, Mr. Trump did not detail any specific celebration that he wanted to see these two days. He previously expressed his desire to honor the army with events such as parades in Washington.
