Transfer notification window changes proposed in DI men’s and women’s basketball

The Division I men’s and women’s basketball oversight committees have proposed that transfer notification windows open for 15 days following the conclusion of the 2026 men’s and women’s Final Fours.
The recommendations must be approved by the Division I Cabinet, which is expected to review the proposals in January. If approved, the legislation would take effect in April 2026.
Under these proposals, the Division I women’s basketball transfer notification window would open April 6-20. The men’s transfer notification window would open from April 7-21.
Currently, transfer windows open after the conclusion of the second round of the Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships and remain open for 30 days.
The rationale for changes to transfer notification windows in basketball includes both committees’ desire to wait until after the championships.
Additionally, the Division I men’s and women’s basketball oversight committees have proposed changes to when student-athletes can request access to the NCAA transfer portal when a coaching change occurs.
Under the proposal, once a school announces the hiring of a new head coach, there will be a five-day period for the new coaching staff and current players to meet. After this five-day period, student-athletes would have 15 days to notify their school to enter the transfer portal.
If a new head coach is not hired within 30 days of the previous coach’s departure, student-athletes would have a 15-day window to enter the transfer portal starting on the 31st day.
However, if a coaching change is made after January 1, student-athletes will need to wait until the transfer notification window opens in April.
