Tottenham looking to sign replacement for goalkeeper Vicario

Italian clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan have reportedly set their sights on Tottenham’s unstable No.1 Guglielmo Vicario as both look for a long-term goalkeeping solution this summer.

According to TEAMtalk, the 29-year-old Italian is now firmly committed to his transfer plans, with Spurs already identifying potential replacements.

Since joining Tottenham in 2023 from Empoli, Vicario has enjoyed mixed fortunes.

The imposing 1.94m goalkeeper produces moments of excellent shot-stopping and leadership. In fact, he played an important role in Spurs’ 2024-25 Europa League campaign and contributed to their continental success.

But a series of recent high-profile errors, including a costly clearing error in a 2-1 home defeat to Fulham, have tested both supporters’ patience and the club’s faith in him.

The same mistake sparked audible boos from fans and forced his manager to publicly defend him.

With the pressure mounting, Vicario is said to be open to a return to Italy. Sources suggest a move to Serie A, with either Inter Milan or AC Milan, is being seriously considered at the end of the season, providing players and clubs with a logical reset.

Tottenham appear ready to act pre-emptively. The club has begun monitoring several talented goalkeepers, indicating that it does not intend to wait until the summer to rebuild between the sticks.

Among their targets are Manchester City’s young English goalkeeper James Trafford and Brighton & Hove Albion’s 23-year-old Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Trafford are growing increasingly frustrated with City’s lack of playing time following the arrival of a new No.1.

Spurs view him as a long-term option who could become the club’s number one.

Verbruggen, meanwhile, has impressed with his performances in the Premier League and now ranks among the best young goalkeepers in Europe, attracting interest from not only Spurs but other elite clubs as well.

Any signing would be made with the aim of immediately boosting the team’s confidence, particularly with a view to European qualification and long-term stability.

For Vicario, a return to Italy could offer a fresh start and a chance to settle back into Serie A, closer to home and perhaps under less pressure than at Spurs.
