Nascar kissed the army with the very first street race on the military base in southern California, where some of the most emblematic scenes of “Top Gun: Maverick” were filmed.
An article by Nascar News reported that the Coronado Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island will become “the first active military base to welcome Nascar Racing” when the street race will take place in 2026.

“The weekend of Nascar San Diego marks a complete three-day event for the first Nascar events ever disputed at an active military base, with the Craftsman Truck series at the head of the Friday, June 19, the Xfinity Racing series on June 20 and the stars of the brilliant cup for the functionality event on June 21,” said the report.
“San Diego will just welcome the second street course in the modern Nascar era,” he added. “The course of Chicago Street organized an Xfinity Cup and action for each of the last three seasons. The race weekend coincided with the 250th anniversary of the American Navy.”

Ben Kennedy, executive vice-president of Nascar, head of chief innovation and race, observed:
“What a special way to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Navy, 250th anniversary of our country, and to put what will undoubtedly be the most anticipated event of 2026. And I am optimistic that it is the best sporting event of the year.”
Kennedy has developed on the race, calling a “mixture of traditional street races in a way where we are going to wrap our tracks in certain streets on the basis. They will pass carriers (planes). They will end up going out on the tarmac, probably by certain military planes, perhaps some F-18, then at the entrance to the base.”
Marine secretary John C. Phelan also thought about the historic event, saying: “Nascar embodies the best of the American spirit by speed, precision and an inflexible pursuit of excellence”, adding:
“Inheriting a race on the Naval Air Station North Island, the birthplace of naval aviation, it is not only a historic first, it is a powerful tribute to the values that we share: the grain, the teamwork and the love of the country. From the flying terrace to the finish line, this collaboration reflects the operational intensity and the unit to a goal which defines both the United States and the NASCAR. move forward and serve something bigger than them. “”
Nascar understands his audience and kisses the army with this incredible race in the same place where Tom Cruise put on these aviators in “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022.
For those who may not know, several emblematic scenes of the suite have been filmed in North Island, including the bar all frequent naval pilots, as well as beach scenes and blows inside “various hangars, office buildings and streets on the basis”.
