Tom Collins cocktail recipe – Love and lemons

This Tom Collins recipe is easy to make with gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and club soda. Served on the ice, this classic cocktail is shiny and refreshing.

It is probably not surprising that I like a Tom Collins cocktail. This sparkling gin drink is only a step removed from the homemade lemonade, after all.

Made with gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup and club soda, it is shiny, sparkling and super refreshing. In addition, because it is a long drink, which means that alcohol is mixed with a good amount of soda water, it is not as strong as other cocktails. It makes it perfect to sip a hot summer day.

If you are new in the manufacture of cocktails at home, I think this Tom Collins recipe is an excellent starting point. You do not need special equipment such as a shaker or a cocktail colander, because this drink is traditionally agitated, not shaken. In addition, once you have gin and simple syrup, you will also be on the right track to make other gin cocktails. First do this recipe, then add a Gimlet or a 75 French to your list to try then!

Tom Collins ingredients

A classic Tom Collins cocktail has 4 basic ingredients:

  • Gin – According to the Diffford guide, the Tom Collins cocktail is probably from London in the 1800s, and it was first manufactured with the old Tom Gin (hence the “Tom” part of his name – the “Collins” part comes from the name of the man who popularized him, John Collins). Nowadays, the London dry gin is the current choice for this drink, but I think you can use any type with a flavor profile you like. My essential brands are Hendrick’s, St. George Botanivore and Koval Dry Gin.
  • Fresh lemon juice – Freshly in a hurry, please! Fresh juice will give this cocktail the best brightest flavor. Bonus: If you have fresh lemons at hand, you can garnish your glass with a lemon slice.
  • Simple syrup – For sweetness. No need to buy this – simple syrup is easy to make with parts in equal parts and water.
  • Club soda or sparkling water – He adds a sparkle to the cocktail and dilutes it in a drinking with low abv and sips.

You will also need ice To serve, and – if you wish – a Cherry in Maraschon (or Luxardo Cherry) for the garnish. Optional, but fun!

How to make a Tom Collins cocktail

I think that Tom Collins is one of the simplest Cocktails to do.

  • Just stir the gin, lemon juice and simple syrup in a collined glass, a highball glass or another large glass.
  • Fill the glass with ice.
  • And garnish with sparkling water!

Stir gently, then Taste and adjust before adding your fillings. If you want a Tangier cocktail, tighten in an additional lemon juice. For a stronger and more plant -based drink, add a little additional gin. Do you want that softer? Pour a simpler syrup.

When you like flavor, keep a lemon slice and / or a cocktail cherry, and take advantage of it!
