This *other* Jay Jones scandal is gaining ground – RedState

Naturally, a lot of attention has been paid to the Jay Jones text message scandal, where the Democratic attorney general nominee for Virginia once expressed his fantasy of assassinating a former Republican colleague in the House of Delegates with “two bullets to the head.”
The texts date from August 2022, but they were revealed to the public for the first time last Friday in published reports including receipts. The fallout has shaken not only the Virginia Democratic Party and Jones’ campaign against state Attorney General Jason Miyares (R), but also the gubernatorial race between Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) and former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D).
But another scandal centered around Jones that came to light just days before the texting scandal is growing, complemented by an investigation into whether Jones fulfilled his community service obligations following his 2022 conviction for dangerous driving.

As RedState previously reported, Jones, who resigned from the House of Delegates in December 2021 after an unsuccessful bid for attorney general, was arrested in January 2022 speeding 116 miles per hour on I-64. The speed limit is 70 MPH. He was later found guilty of dangerous driving.
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Jones’ attorney “sought to differ the case four times before the General District Court system reported that the case was changed to “deferred disposition,” meaning there was an agreement to avoid potential prison time in exchange for community service. “
Jones was able to avoid up to a year in prison, paid a $1,500 fine and was ordered by a judge to perform 1,000 hours of community service. Strangely, however, 500 hours of this show were played at…Jones’ own PAC:
Documents from Jones’ attorney show Jones completed 1,000 hours of community service in 2023, including 500 hours for Jones’ own political action committee, called Meet Our Moment. The PAC is registered with the Virginia Board of Elections and is not a nonprofit charitable organization.
As this does not meet the requirements of community service, an investigation was opened:
The New Kent County Commonwealth’s Attorney told 7News that Jones’ community service records did not clearly indicate that Meet Our Moment was a political action committee, much less that it was Jones’ own political action committee.
The prosecutor said that community service must be carried out within the framework of a non-political and non-profit organization.
“It’s supposed to be something where you give back to the community,” said New Kent County Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick.
Last week, 7News asked Jones’ campaign exactly what he did during those 500 hours at his PAC. We never got a response.
Additionally, we also learned this week that there are others in Virginia with similar driving violations who are being handled differently than Jay Jones:
If you were caught driving 46 miles per hour over the speed limit in Virginia, would you expect to serve jail time or at least have your license suspended or your driving privileges restricted? These are the kinds of consequences many Virginia drivers have faced, but not Jay Jones.
It has become increasingly clear that the man who wants to become state attorney general has not only benefited from Democratic privilege, but also feels above the law. While it’s not an uncommon thing among Democrats, the fact that Jones is running as Virginia’s “top cop” should give voters across the commonwealth pause.
Over the past week, Virginians have learned who Jay Jones really is when he thinks no one is looking, and they should vote accordingly.
