Oble Boards Series ‘Segunda Temporada and ‘How to Kill Your Sister’

As negotiations reach a fever pitch at Mipcom, production and distribution company Oble has added two new titles to its list of series sold to international buyers at Cannes.

Seven-episode half-hour Spanish comedy-drama “Segunda Temporada (“Second Season”), commissioned by Filmin, reunites the hot creators of “Autodefensa,” which won Best Short Series at Series Mania 2024: Director/Writer Miguel Ángel Blanca (“Magaluf Ghost Town”), Named Spanish Talent to Watch in 2021. Variety and co-writers Berta Prieto and Víctor Diago.

As in “Autodefensa”, composed of autonomous episodes and set in Barcelona, Prieto also plays the main role, joined here by Adan Domínguez.

We follow Paula, a once-famous literary prodigy who is now trying to rebuild her life amid the disoriented cultural scene of 2024 Barcelona. According to the logline, “surrounded by second-rate celebrities and fading fame, she navigates precarious jobs, creative burnout, and the relentless search for ‘the next big thing.’

“The series captures the absurdities of post-fame existence while retaining the authenticity and irreverence that audiences loved in ‘Autodefensa,’” Oble said in a statement.

Set to begin filming next week in 2026, “Segunda Temporada” is produced by Barcelona-based Boogaloo Films (Sorella di clausura de Locarno) in co-production with Spanish-Portuguese premium SVOD service Filmin, creative company Canada and Oble.

Meanwhile, the tragicomedy “How to Kill Your Sister” had its world premiere in the Canneseries main competition and received critical acclaim last April, before being broadcast on Belgian streamer Streamz on August 21 and on commercial channel Play4 in early September. Belgian company FBO produces, in co-production with German company MadeForFilm, a Banijay company, and ZDF Neo.

Co-created and written by Pedro Elia (Control Pedro) and Evelien Broekaert, the story revolves around Anna (Emma Rotsaert) who shows up at her older sister Kat’s door with a coffin, after eight years of absence, seeking answers to why her sister abandoned her after her parents died.

One answer is that Anna is simply too much of a wild child for Kat to handle, who has settled for a submissive marriage to a toxic control freak. Anna’s latest excess is that she announces that she is terminally ill and wants Kat (Marjan De Schutter) to accompany her on one last trip.

Unfortunately, it’s true. The siblings embark on a hilarious and dark road trip through Flanders and Spain. “I wanted extreme comedy and drama, all in one show,” said director and co-writer Geirnaert (“De Dag,” “Flatlife”). Variety.

For Oble, “How to Kill Your Sister” balances humor and tragedy with care and precision, offering a heartfelt and genuinely funny exploration of grief, forgiveness and family, highlighted by the remarkable performance of Marjan De Schutter (Geldwolven, The Twelve) and Emma Rotsaert.

Oble’s Mipcom slate includes Norwegian comedy “Nepobaby” from popular showrunner Henriette Steenstrup, sold by Oble to English-speaking CBC territories for CBC Gem in Canada and SBS in Australia ahead of the Cannes market, with Nordisk Film signing deals with TV2 Denmark and SVT Sweden. The series which won the prize for best screenplay and best distribution at the Canneseries will be broadcast on October 23 on TV2 Play in Norway.

Rounding out Oble’s slate is the premium Netflix/RTS period drama “Winter Palace” produced by Swiss company Point Prod with Oble Studios.

Talk to Variety From the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, Katia Sol, co-founder of Oble, declared: “Mipcom is one of the largest content sales markets and all our meetings are crowded. The buyers are there, but not the risk takers, looking for sure values.”
