New York Yankees exchanged for David Bednar and Camilo Doval on the deadline for trade. These movements have direct implications for the future of Devin Williams in the Bronx.
The Yankees acquired Williams from Milwaukee Brewers during the offseason. For the Brewers, Williams was a closest dominant, an All-Star twice and a double lift from the Trevor Hoffman National League of the year. On the Yankees, it was far from that.
He has a 5.01 MPM and was removed from the role of the closest for a while. He is a free agent after the season, while Bednar and Doval are both closings with the control of clubs this year. Adam Weinrib of Fandeded predicted that Williams would have left after this season.

“The readers are intrinsically volatile, and although there were a lot of good with Williams in 2025 (54 ks in 41 1/3 lanches launched, surprisingly low 1.137 Whip), the most surprising trade of the Yankees of the last off -season was already felt as a one -year commitment before the date of the trade,” wrote Weinrib. “Now, with two high -level options with a more in -depth experience when arriving in Bednar (controlled until 2026) and Doval (until 2027), the Yankees are very unlikely to go through a song and a dance with Williams this offseason, although they can risk the qualification offer for him to receive another choice of recovery when he leaves.”
Bednar and Doval did not look great in their beginnings of the Yankees, but the two have proven that they can be star closers in the big leagues. Williams does not seem to find the magic he had in Milwaukee, and he should be able to find a lucrative agreement in free agency.
The Yankees know that he will have a solid market, even after a year of decline, and has made sure to win not one but two potential replacements for him more closely.
