Ari Aster made his debut of the Cannes Film Festival on Friday with the world premiere of his latest psychological nightmare – this time a Western set at the Covid time – Friday. “Eddington” reunites the filmmaker “Hereditary”, “Midsommar” and “Beau is father” with Joaquin Phoenix of this last film. Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler also play.
ASTER became known as a master of the kind of psychological horror following his film in small groups “Hereditary”, an intense look at the consequences of a hereditary family trauma, in 2018. In “Eddington”, Phoenix plays local Sheriff Joe Cross in a small town in New Mexico during the pandemic cocvid 2020. Pascal, the mayor of the city who leads the community to a world of chaos with his dubious decision. The film explores the power of false news, the fragility of the community and the way in which conspiracy theories can lead to a rabbit hole that is difficult to get out. The Thewrap review on the feature film on Friday called it a “risky fantasia on national themes”.
Joining Aster, Phoenix, Pascal, Stone, Butler and the rest of the “Eddington” distribution on the Red Carpet of Cannes on Friday were other than Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, Harris Dickinson (whose “triangle of sadness” has just won the Palme d’Or Festival Prize in 2022), Julia Garner, Joel Edgerton and more.
