The truth behind Rangers manager search as Gerrard’s chances plummet amid fresh talk

Rangers have not contacted Steven Gerrard again despite rumors that new rounds of negotiations have taken place in recent days.

It emerged on Saturday evening that the former Gers boss had withdrawn from the race to succeed Russell Martin, who was sacked after just 17 games in charge of the Govan club.

However, several bookmakers showed on Wednesday that Gerrard, who won the title with Rangers in 2021, was back among the favorites for the job.

No new talks between Gerrard and Rangers

The PA news agency understands there have been no further talks between the two sides.

Former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat and ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl are two of the frontrunners for the job.

Muscat, who has reportedly held talks with the Govan club, guided Shanghai Port to first place in the Chinese Super League, two points clear with four matches remaining. Their domestic season ends on November 22.

Speculation abounds that the Govan club will field Neil McCann on an interim basis until his former Gers teammate is free to come to Glasgow.

The 52-year-old won a domestic treble with Rangers in 2003 in his only season at Ibrox and as coach he won titles in Australia, Japan and China with Melbourne Victory, Yokohama F Marinos and Shanghai Port.

Rohl, 36, is said to have impressed the Rangers hierarchy during last week’s talks, but rightly or wrongly he may well be seen by scarred and skeptical Gers supporters as another version of Martin.

Previously assistant manager at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and the German national team, Rohl avoided relegation problems in the 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship on Wednesday.

The German led the Owls to a 12th-place finish in the league in his only full season as manager before leaving the struggling Yorkshire club in July.

Other names on the bookmakers’ lists include former Manchester United player and boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Hearts boss Derek McInnes, former Chelsea and West Ham boss Graham Potter and former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil.

Rangers return from the international break with a home match against Dundee United on Saturday. The Light Blues are eighth in the table after seven matches, 11 points behind leaders Hearts and nine behind Celtic.
