“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is excellent, and the third season was a thing of pure joy. The “Star Trek: The Original Series” Prequel Show has sort of managed to explore the major new ideas in “Star Trek” and watch the program’s past, presenting younger versions of beloved characters with a certain regularity. Since many fans had already seen younger versions of Kirk, Spock, Uhura and the rest of the Enterprise team in Kelvin-Verse “Star Trek” films, it became an even bigger challenge, but they managed to get it out of the park. Ethan Peck as Spock is absolutely perfect, with echoes of the previous actors Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto while being a totally unique performance, and Celia Rose Gooding as a young Nyota Uhura illuminates the screen, drawing from their love for the character of childhood.
The actors who give life to the youngest versions of these classic characters are all doing an excellent job, but there is one who was an incredible surprise this season: Martin Quinn as a young Montgomery Scott engineer, better known as Scotty. Appearing for the first time at the end of season 2, Quinn manages to fly each scene in which he is without any feeling of making a pastic of Scotties past.
Scotty de Quinn feels fully serious and it’s perfect
One of the things that updates the original characters in the “Star Trek” series so difficult is that they have become cultural touch stones for many, and have been referenced and usurped in Hauts Paradis since the series made its debut in 1966. The brand of the brand of the Canadian actor healed the dialogue, imitating the original captain James T. Kirk. With Scotty, however, Quinn plays a little more soft things, with a younger version of the character made famous by James Doohan who does not drink much and seems to the bright and innocent eyes, far from the more graying and sarcastic man that he will become one day.
While the other younger versions of the inherited characters have all received their own small adjustments because they would be different without the time and experience of their “original series” counterparts, Scotty is probably the most different, but it works brilliantly. Quinn and Doohan play exasperation in the same way, and you can see glimpse of the hardness of the years of Starfleet, the young brilliant officer. He still works under the command of Lieutenant Pelia (Carol Kane), the current engineering chief, but he will be responsible for maintaining the ship before he knows it, with all the stress that accompanies him. But for the moment, he is always an adorable young officer trying to hang around with the already experienced crew of the company, and he is perfect.
Strange New Worlds allows us to fall in love with these characters again
For fans of “Star Trek” who have been watching for years (and in many cases, decades), the characters of Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Scotty and the rest of the Enterprise Bridge original team are really special. Each version of “Star Trek” is at least somewhat a Hangout show, because the main part of the prosecution of adventures every week is that we can go with the adorable magnets that make up each series. The simple fact of spending time with the crew is part of the draw, and they managed to reproduce this feeling on “Strange New Worlds”. The inherited characters and the new characters have the chance to shine, and although the original series is revered “Strange New Worlds” does not feel fully indebted and does not try to simply repeat the past – a problem that tormented the films towards the Kelvin.
Quinn is a perfect addition to the distribution, and it is honestly an explosion to see him interact with the rest of the crew because he is the new guy and they all start to take place. Honestly, I would look at an entire series about the misadventures of Scotty and Pelia in engineering, because they are the two of the comic duo for the ages. Maybe when she leaves, she will give him her Starfleet Fanny pack?
