The SJSU transgender volleyball player, Balaire Fleming, responds to the former coach

EXCLUSIVE: The former transgender volleyball player in the state of San Jose (SJSU), Balaire Fleming, responded to Fox News Digital for the first time concerning the allegations that emerged from the program scandal in 2024.

Fleming tackled the recent allegations made by former assistant coach Melissa Batie-Smose, who filed a complaint in September against the California State University system (CSU), because SJSU is one of the 23 Californian schools that are part of the system. Batie-Smose told Fox News Digital that SJSU had welcomed Fleming to special exceptions that were not granted to female athletes.

“Do not introduce yourself to train without apologies, sitting in the stands eating while the practice is going on, this kind of thing,” said Batie-Smose about the special exceptions reserved exclusively for Fleming.

SJSU and CSU refused to respond to these allegations.

But Fleming responded to the Batie-Smose complaint and addressed the former teammate and co-captain Brooke Slusser.

The two players came to SJSU as transfers of years earlier. Slusser was transferred from the University of Alabama in 2023, while Fleming was transferred from Coastal Carolina a year earlier.

Fleming was previously the centerpiece of the best volleyball team in the history of John Champe High School (in Virginia) with a historic season of 19 victories in 2019 – the senior year of Fleming. That year, Fleming was appointed first team of all districts and set the school season record for eliminations in one season with 266. Fleming set the record for a school match for the naughty with 30 against Battlefield High School in September of the same year.
