The Senate confirms the former national security advisor to Trump, Mike Waltz, as UN ambassador
Washington – The Senate approved Friday the former National Security Advisor of the White House Mike Waltz to serve as an American ambassador to the United Nations, ending a test of nine months where the United States was without permanent representative of the organization.
Voting will likely allow Waltz to participate in the UN general meeting next week in New York, softening the previous concerns that it would not be confirmed in time. President Donald Trump is expected to make comments during the annual rally on Tuesday.
The senators confirmed the waltz during a vote of 47-43. Sense. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Mark Kelly of Arizona and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire were the only democrats to vote yes. Senator Rand Paul, R-Ky., Was the only republican to vote no.
Trump announced in May that he named Waltz, 51, in the diplomatic post after being his adviser to the National House security since the president was sworn in January. Waltz was on thin ice with Trump since March, when he admitted that he accidentally added a journalist to a private thread on the messaging application with other senior national security officials to discuss military strikes in Yemen.
During its confirmation audience of the Senate earlier this summer, Waltz underlined the need for reform to the UN, including the desire to review American funding, as well as the rotation of anti -Semitism in the institution. Before joining Trump’s White House, Waltz served in the house from 2019 to 2025.
The president had initially appointed the representative Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., to serve as an ambassador to the UN, but he finally removed it from the process in March. Trump quoted his concern that Stefanik’s departure from the house would make it even more difficult to pass his program with the already thin majority of the GOP.
Waltz will succeed the career ambassador Dorothy Shea, who has occupied the headquarters as an actor since the start of the second Trump administration.
Its American representation at the UN arrives at a precarious moment in international affairs while the wars in Gaza and Ukraine endlessly rage.
Negotiations between Israel and Hamas have not progressed and Israeli defense forces launched an offensive on the ground in Gaza City this week.
