The second lady launches a summer reading challenge in the middle of the downward literacy rates

The second Lady Usha Vance de America announced the “Summer Reading Challenge”, encouraging children across the country to open a book this summer.
“The adventure, the imagination and the discovery await you – just between the pages of a book,” writes the second lady of a letter.
“We are delighted to invite all children (K-8) to participate in the summer reading challenge of the second lady in 2025,” continues the letter.

Children are encouraged to read 12 pounds of their choice between June 1 and September 5 – and follow their progress through a reading journal issued by the White House.
Nicole Reeves, director of communications for the second lady, told Fox News Digital that Ms. Vance was very delighted to announce this project in the hope of young readers throughout the summer.

“It is essential that we encourage our young people to continue to learn outside the class, and this challenge offers an excellent opportunity to do so,” added Reeves.
In the newspaper of their progress, students must list the titles of the book and the author, the date on which they finished reading books and a brief reflection on the favorite book they read.

The National Center for Education Statistics noted in a 2022 report that average reading scores among 9 -year -old students have decreased by five points compared to 2020, marking the highest drop in the average reading score since 1990.

According to the National Literacy Institute, around 40% of American students cannot read at a basic level.
It has also been found that almost 70% of low -income fourth year students cannot read at a basic level.

The Institute also found that “readers in difficulty” suffer both socially and emotionally.
Reading promotes positive results on mental health, helping to reduce stress and anxiety, according to the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM).

Children who met the second lady’s summer reading challenge in 2025 will receive a personalized certificate and a small price.
